ECTAA’s President meets with European Commission’s Vice President Viviane REDING to discuss revision of the package travel directive

12-2-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Thursday 31st January, ECTAA’s President and Uniline CEO Boris ZGOMBA and a group of Tourism Industry leaders, met with European Commission Vice President Mrs Viviane REDING to discuss the revision of the package Travel Directive.

The meeting gave to all participants the opportunity to discuss the changes which have occurred in the Travel market since the adoption of the Directive in 1990.

In particular, the liberalisation of air transport, and the development of e-commerce have contributed to significant changes in the way consumers purchase travel services.  The current legislative framework set by the package travel directive needs to be adapted to this new business environment.

Said President Zgomba: “The package travel directive needs to be revised in order to ensure a level playing field among all business actors while preserving the competitiveness of the Tourism Industry, which is crucial for the economies of all Member states. It is of paramount importance that the same rules apply to all industry actors. In this context, I welcome Vice president REDING initiative to discuss this important issue with the Industry. “

The European Commission is currently evaluating various legislative options to revise the directive and a decision is expected before the summer 2013.
