EBU Member Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) marked 80 years of broadcasting with a stunning concert featuring Bulgaria’s rich tradition of musical culture

A stunning concert featuring Bulgaria’s rich tradition of musical culture was the centerpiece of weekend celebrations (25 to 26 January) marking 80 years of broadcasting by EBU Member Bulgaria National Radio (BNR).

SOFIA, 28-1-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — The performance by the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by composer and conductor Emil Tabakov, was broadcast to BNR listeners and a live audience of more than 5,000 people.

Guests included local politicians, representatives from neighboring broadcasters including Romania, Macedonia, and Turkey; the chair of the European Broadcasting Union Radio Committee Graham Ellis and its Director General Ingrid Deltenre; Andrzej Siezieniewski, the Chief Executive Officer of the Board of Polish Radio as well as the Secretary General of the Asian Broadcasting Union.

Ms Deltenre congratulated BNR, which has been a full member of the EBU since 1993 and annually contributes more than 100 concerts to the EUROVISION Music Exchange – the largest classical music repertory in the world.

“During eight decades of public service, BNR has shared its rich tradition of culture and music with audiences across Europe,” Ms Deltenre said. “We hope their example encourages orchestral groups elsewhere.”

BNR has six musical ensembles: the Symphony Orchestra, the Folk Music Orchestra, the Mixed Choir, the Children’s choir, the Big Band and the Radio Kids Vocal Group. Along with the performances of classical music, folklore and jazz music, they constantly work with new and young composers, instrumentalists and singers, contributing to the development of a contemporary musical culture in Bulgaria and abroad.

The anniversary celebrations also saw BNR look to the future at an international conference titled ‘Public Radio in Europe: Trends, Challenges and the Way Forward.’

The necessity for secure and constant funding and favourable public service media legal framework were discussed during a meeting between Ms Deltenre and Bulgarian Prime Minister Bojko Borisov and the Speaker of the Parliament Tsetska Tsatcheva.
