EBRD Loan Supports UzCarlsberg in Enhancing Production and Food Safety in Uzbekistan

(IN BRIEF) The EBRD is providing UzCarlsberg with a US$ 6 million working capital loan to support the acquisition of ingredients and packaging materials, enhancing operational efficiency and food safety in Uzbekistan. The loan will help the company manage seasonal stock and meet increased summer demand. Funded in part by the Japan-EBRD Cooperation Fund, the project also aligns with the EBRD’s mission to support private entrepreneurship and food security. Uzbekistan has received over €5.5 billion in EBRD investments to date, making it the top recipient in Central Asia for five consecutive years.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 15-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is extending a working capital loan of up to US$ 6 million (approximately €5.7 million) to UzCarlsberg, Uzbekistan’s foremost brewer of international branded beverages. This financial support will bolster the company’s ability to maintain efficient operations, especially during peak demand in the summer, and advance food safety standards in the country.

UzCarlsberg, a trusted client of the EBRD since 2022, will use the funds to secure key raw materials and packaging supplies, enabling better inventory management and ensuring steady production flows throughout the year. The infusion of working capital is set to enhance the company’s operational flexibility, improve responsiveness to seasonal fluctuations, and contribute to the continued availability of high-quality products in the Uzbek market.

The initiative is backed by the Japan-EBRD Cooperation Fund, which supports strategic development goals through financial and technical assistance.

The project aligns with broader objectives to improve food security and supply chain resilience in Uzbekistan. With rising consumer demand and a growing market for premium beverages, the EBRD’s support will help UzCarlsberg reinforce its role as a key player in the national food and beverage sector.

UzCarlsberg’s expansion and modernization efforts are part of the EBRD’s wider commitment to strengthening private-sector entrepreneurship across Central Asia. To date, the Bank has invested over €5.5 billion in Uzbekistan through 174 projects, making the country the top EBRD investment destination in the region for the past five years.
