DNV Supports KREDO Offshore in Offshore Wind Measurement Project for South Korean Green Energy

(IN BRIEF) DNV, a leading energy expert and assurance provider, is collaborating with KREDO Offshore, a Korean renewable energy developer, to advance offshore wind farm projects in South Korea. DNV is overseeing the deployment and monitoring of seven Floating Lidar System (FLS) devices, collecting critical wind and met ocean data. The insights gained will aid in establishing KREDO Offshore’s business case for its multi-billion-dollar wind project. South Korea aims to derive 20% of its power from renewable sources by 2030, and offshore wind plays a vital role in achieving this goal. DNV’s expertise positions it as a key partner in advancing renewable energy adoption in South Korea.

(PRESS RELEASE) BÆRUM, 2-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Independent energy expert and assurance provider, DNV, is collaborating with KREDO Offshore, a Korean renewable energy developer, to advance the development of offshore wind farms in South Korea. The project marks a significant step toward the expansion of renewable energy sources in the country and aligns with South Korea’s ambitious Green New Deal initiative.

As part of its comprehensive support, DNV is overseeing the management, deployment, and monitoring of seven Floating Lidar System (FLS) devices. These devices collect wind measurements using vertical light detection and ranging technology, along with essential met ocean data, making them a cost-effective and efficient choice for offshore wind projects.

“While offshore wind projects offer higher and more reliable wind speeds, ever challenging commercial conditions require considerable confidence in the accuracy of the site wind data assessment to fine tune the design to the specific site conditions to minimise costs and risks. DNV’s extensive relevant experience in offshore wind gave us the assurance that we could trust the data generated from this project. The accuracy of this wind data assessment is critical in our decision-making process and gives us confidence on the viability of our projects,” said Mike Hallett, Director of Engineering, KREDO Offshore.

“We are delighted to have secured this contract,” said Brice Le Gallo, Vice President and Regional Director APAC, Energy Systems at DNV. “Offshore wind is a key focus area for DNV in APAC and this latest work demonstrates our expertise and position as a trusted advisor in offshore wind and in measurements. We are also very proud to be able to contribute to South Korea’s ambitious climate targets by supporting the implementation of offshore wind.”

DNV’s role extends beyond data collection, encompassing a thorough review of supplier track records and contracts, FLS design evaluation, and data analysis. By combining wind measurements and technical data from wind turbines, DNV will predict the wind farm’s net annual energy production. Additionally, DNV is providing guidance to minimize operational risks, ensuring the highest quality of the collected dataset.

The data and insights derived from this project will significantly contribute to the establishment of KREDO Offshore’s business case for its multi-billion-dollar wind project. South Korea has set an ambitious goal of sourcing 20% of its power from renewable energy by 2030. The burgeoning wind energy industry, supported by policies and incentives, plays a crucial role in achieving this target.

“Due to a number of complex nearshore constraints in the Korean peninsula, many offshore wind developers are looking into far offshore areas where the installation of conventional met-masts is less feasible. As the FLS technology has become mature and has been widely accepted by the industry, we have seen the significant increase in the demand for the use of FLS in offshore wind measurement campaigns in South Korea. We are committed to support one of our key customers, KREDO Offshore in their FLS project. Using an FLS can be an attractive option for investors as it delivers important data critical in the design of offshore wind farms, added Yoon Woo Sik, Senior Consultant and Project Manager, DNV Korea.

DNV’s unparalleled expertise in offshore wind project development and operations positions it as a trusted partner for KREDO Offshore. The collaboration reflects the collective commitment to accelerating renewable energy adoption in South Korea, driving sustainable growth and reducing carbon emissions.
