DNV Launches Groundbreaking Digital Framework to Transform Energy Asset Management

(IN BRIEF) DNV has launched DNV-RP-0670, an asset information modelling framework designed to modernize asset information management in the energy sector. The framework establishes a common digital language that streamlines information flow among organizations and IT systems, replacing outdated document-driven processes with a data-driven approach. Developed in collaboration with key industry players—including Aker BP, Aker Solutions, Aibel, Equinor, and the SIRIUS Centre at the University of Oslo—the RP aims to reduce errors, cut costs, and improve data quality through standardized information models for equipment, systems, and processes. Notable benefits include enhanced collaboration, automatic compliance verification, and significant operational savings, as evidenced by a pilot project on the Norwegian continental shelf. Lucy Craig and Lillian Hella of DNV, along with Helge Ferdinand Schjøtt from Aker BP, highlighted the framework’s potential to boost efficiency, safety, and profitability across the sector and beyond.

(PRESS RELEASE) BÆRUM, 28-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — DNV has unveiled its new recommended practice, DNV-RP-0670 Asset Information Modelling Framework, designed to revolutionize asset information management in the energy sector. This framework addresses the long-standing challenges of interoperability, information silos, and inefficient reliance on document-based data exchange. By establishing a common digital language for engineering assets, the RP enhances the flow of information among organizations, individuals, and IT applications, mitigating issues like duplicated work, manual mapping, and increased operational costs.

Lillian Hella, DNV’s project manager for the RP, explains, “To achieve good digital interaction, both people and machines must speak the same language. In close collaboration with key industry players, we have developed an RP that enables more precise and efficient information exchange.” The new framework is intended to standardize the creation of information models for equipment, systems, processes, and technical data—an essential capability as automation and artificial intelligence become ever more integral to the industry.

DNV-RP-0670 is geared toward operators, facility owners, contractors, suppliers, and service providers, promoting a fundamental shift from a document-driven to a data-driven approach. This transition not only fosters enhanced collaboration and resource reuse but also paves the way for advanced services such as automatic verification and integrity control. The RP’s development saw contributions from notable industry names including Aker BP, Aker Solutions, Aibel, Equinor, and the SIRIUS Centre at the University of Oslo. Moreover, the POSC Caesar Association (PCA) will oversee the management and publication of the digital vocabulary associated with the framework.

Lucy Craig, Senior Vice President for Growth, Innovation & Digitalization, Energy Systems at DNV, underscores the impact of the initiative: “Common information models ensure different systems, applications, and companies can exchange data more efficiently. Standardization is key to reducing costs and increasing profitability. By implementing common models, the industry can save millions, improve data quality, and enable automatic compliance verification. This RP is a significant step toward better collaboration and information management, supporting the energy transition.” In fact, a pilot project on a major Norwegian continental shelf initiative demonstrated that employing a common digital language could cut manual errors by at least 50% and generate savings exceeding half a billion Norwegian kroner (approximately $45 million USD).

Helge Ferdinand Schjøtt, Business Analyst at Aker BP, added, “The RP is vital for the energy sector. It enhances collaboration, ensures compliance with industry standards and regulations, and improves safety, decision-making, and efficiency. Moreover, this standardized, scalable solution holds promise for benefiting other sectors as well.”
