Deutsche Telekom: T-Systems and FireEye form partnership specializing in defending against complex cyber attacks in Europe

  • T-Systems expands its partner network
  • Detection and defense against cyber attacks in minutes
  • Leading “Managed Security Service Provider” in Europe with FireEye

Hannover, 3-11-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — Deutsche Telekom continues to expand its network with top companies in the IT sector. The business customer arm of Deutsche Telekom, T-Systems, today announced a partnership with FireEye, the leader in stopping today’s advanced attacks. The new partnership will specialize in defending against complex cyber attacks that are not discovered fast enough by traditional detection systems and is a further step in Telekom CEO Timotheus Höttges’ innovation strategy. In July,T-Systems announced its cooperation with salesforce.com for business cloud solutions. With selected partnerships, the Group wants to become the leading information and telecommunications provider in Europe.

FireEye and T-Systems will thus be offering a comprehensively managed service for corporate customers in Europe in order to protect companies quickly and effectively against IT espionage and cyber attacks. The solutions from FireEye supplement traditional defense systems such as firewalls and anti-virus programs that are unable to detect and ward off targeted attacks.

“In a study produced by FireEye (source: M-Trends 2014), it found that when responding to breaches, on average, companies were compromised for 229 days. With FireEye, we are increasing the detection speed, enabling us to initiate the defense within minutes,” says Reinhard Clemens, Member of the Telekom Board of Management and CEO of T-Systems. “Together we not only provide our customers with an alert but also detect the relevance immediately and can initiate targeted countermeasures.”

FireEye is one of the innovation leaders in the area of cyber security. Last year alone, for example, the company’s experts identified eleven zero-day attacks, mostly in standard programs such as Internet Explorer or Adobe. “No other provider of security solutions has identified so many critical security gaps during this period and worked on fixing them,” explained Frank Kölmel, VP Central Europe at FireEye. “Together withT-Systems we are able to offer a Managed Security Service and thus unrivalled protection against cyber attacks in Europe.”

Analysis of suspicious data in a secure environment
Within this unique partnership FireEye solutions will supplement the “Advanced Cyber Defense by Telekom” (ACD) security portfolio that has been developed byT-Systems and is tailored to the security requirements of major international corporations. As a “Managed Service,” T-Systems also offers the integration and operation of solutions at the customer and the monitoring and evaluation of events. The platform comes into its own in the event of “under the radar” cyber attacks, for example with fake file attachments in e-mails or with malware left on websites (drive-by downloads). One example: Suspicious e-mail attachments are first isolated and then opened in order to analyze the “behavior” of the suspicious file in a controlled environment. The examination of files and documents for malicious code always takes place in a protected environment that virtualizes the working environment such as Apple, Windows, Java, and Office. If critical security incidents occur, T-Systemsspecialists will take over the comprehensive forensic analysis, ranging from digital forensics and analysis of malware right through to the reconstruction of procedures and securing of evidence.”

Cyber security and cloud are growth areas
Alongside cloud computing, cyber security is one of the growth areas of Deutsche Telekom. Together with the Munich Security Conference, the Group will organize the third Cyber Security Summit on November 3, 2014. The summit in Bonn will give representatives from the fields of politics and business the opportunity to join with experts in discussing strategies and ideas for enhancing security in the networked world. Ashar Aziz, founder, vice chairman and Chief Strategy Officer of FireEye, will be attending the third Cyber Security Summit of Deutsche Telekom and Munich Security Conference on November 3 in Bonn.
