Deutsche Post Unveils Eco-Friendly ‘Flower Letter’ Stamp, Pioneering Recycled Paper Use

(IN BRIEF) Deutsche Post is introducing the “Flower Letter” stamp as part of its “World of Letters” standard series, available from April 3 in postal outlets and online. Priced at 95 cents, this stamp is the first gummed stamp made entirely from recycled paper, developed with Tullis Russell to save resources and lower CO2 emissions. The stamp, featuring a green leaf instead of the euro symbol, will be produced in a total run of around 680 million, replacing the older “Balloon Post” design by Bettina Walter. While a self-adhesive version is available on conventional paper, from 2026 Deutsche Post plans to convert all gummed stamps to recycled paper, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability as a member of the Pro Recycling Paper initiative.

(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 2-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Deutsche Post is set to launch its innovative “Flower Letter” stamp, which will be available for purchase both in postal retail outlets and online starting April 3. As part of the “World of Letters” standard series, this 95-cent stamp marks a significant sustainability milestone: it is the first gummed stamp produced entirely on recycled paper.

Developed in partnership with British paper manufacturer Tullis Russell, the new paper not only reduces CO2 emissions but also saves wood, water, and electricity compared to conventional paper. The gummed version of the “Flower Letter” stamp was manufactured using 12.8 metric tons of 100% recycled material, and a total of 82.5 million stamps will be issued in sheets and rolls. In a design twist, a green leaf is printed next to the year in lieu of the euro symbol.

Additionally, a self-adhesive variant is available, although it is currently printed on traditional paper due to technical constraints. Overall, approximately 680 million stamps will be produced, with the new design replacing the previous 95-cent “Balloon Post” stamp, created by Deutsche Post stamp designer Bettina Walter.

Looking ahead, from 2026, Deutsche Post intends to transition all gummed stamps in both its standard series and special edition issues to recycled paper. This initiative underscores the company’s pioneering commitment to sustainability and its membership in the Pro Recycling Paper initiative, as it continually strives to reduce raw material consumption, CO2 emissions, and energy usage in stamp production.
