Deutsche Bahn acquired Veolia Transport Central Europe

Takeover of Veolia Transport Central Europe makes DB Arriva the largest international operator of passenger transport services in Central and Eastern Europe

Berlin, 24-6-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Deutsche Bahn has acquired the Central and East European business operations from Veolia Transdev. The transaction has been completed and the approvals issued by the competition authorities. The parties have agreed not to disclose details of the purchase price.

DB Arriva, the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary responsible for regional transport services outside Germany, is to assume responsibility within the DB Group for the operations acquired from Veolia Transport Central Europe (VTCE). DB Arriva will thus become the largest international operator of passenger transport services in Central and Eastern Europe and, as a result of the
acquisition, will expand its current business in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The markets in Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia will also be added, bringing the number of countries in which Arriva operates to fifteen.

Speaking on the takeover, Ulrich Homburg, Member of the Management Board responsible for Passenger Transport at Deutsche Bahn, said: “The acquisition will enable us to continue to expand DB Arriva’s role as our growth platform for European regional transport. It will enhance Deutsche Bahn passenger transport services overall. The experience we have gained in markets outside
Germany will benefit our business operations in Germany.”

VTCE employs more than 6,300 people and operates over 3,400 vehicles ataround 60 locations. Revenues generated in 2012 amounted to EUR 253 million. The company’s core business activities focus on inner-city and regional bus services. Its extended portfolio includes school bus, long-distance and charter services.

The Czech Republic and Poland have the largest share of the business operations acquired from VTCE. In the Czech Republic, a workforce in excess of 2,600 people operates around 1,600 vehicles to provide bus services in the regions around Prague, Ostrava and Teplice. Regional rail services are also provided in Moravia.

DB Arriva’s current rail transport business in Poland is now to be supplemented by bus services in the northern and southern parts of the country (1,800 employees and 840 vehicles).
