Destatis: 42,300 children crossed the border to Germany without being accompanied in 2015

WIESBADEN, 02-Aug-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — In 2015, the number of minors who were taken into care by youth welfare offices because of unaccompanied entry from abroad rose substantially. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that in 2015 roughly 42,300 children and young people crossed the border to Germany without being accompanied by a holder of a right of custody. That was an increase of 30,700 minors, or 263%, on the previous year. Roughly 38,700 of these young people were male (91%), while just roughly 3,600 girls entered Germany unaccompanied.

In 2015, the youth welfare offices in Germany took a total of just over 77,600 children and young people into care. That was an increase of 29,600 people, or 62%, compared with the previous year.
