Construction seen as investment in the future

COLOGNE, 12-Sep-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — The “DEG-Campus” in Cologne’s city centre is taking shape: On Monday, 11 September 2017, DEG – Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH, inaugurated its extension building on Agrippastraße. “Our decision to build an extension was related to the fact that our head office, completed in 2008 and designed to house 450 staff, was full to capacity, since DEG has continued to grow successfully over the last few years. By building this extension we are investing in the future,” said Bruno Wenn, Chairman of DEG’s Management Board, on the occasion of the inauguration.

The ceremony was attended by, among others, the Chairman of DEG’s Supervisory Board Hans-Joachim Fuchtel, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, and Dr Norbert Kloppenburg, Member of the Executive Board of KfW. The city of Cologne was represented by deputy mayor Hans-Werner Bartsch. The new building was realised by the Düsseldorf-based architecture firm slapa oberholz pszczulny | sop architekten and the Cologne branch of MBN Bau AG.

Distinctive feature: glass “Skybox”

The five-storey building, completed in time, will accommodate around 120 workspaces. The architectural design features a glass façade broken up by projections and recesses. Occupying around 200 square metres and erected on the Agrippastrasse / Nord-Süd-Fahrt corner above the fourth floor, the glass “Skybox” is the striking distinctive feature of the building.

A visually attractive underground passage-way is linking the head offices and the extension building. In addition, a “floating” conference room was built in the floor-to-ceiling atrium in DEG’s headquarters, level with the first floor, in order to expand the existing conference facilities.

“Being one of the larger companies in Cologne, we are aware of our social responsibility. Together with our neighbours, such as the Kunststation St Peter (Saint Peter Art Center) and the Literaturhaus Köln (Literature House), we wish to make a contribution towards turning the Agrippa neighbourhood into a diverse cultural quarter,” stated DEG Chairman, Wenn. For its civic commitment, for example in connection with the local “Kölner FreiwilligenTage” volunteer event, DEG has been nominated for this year’s German Civic Engagement Award, which will be awarded in December.

DEG, a subsidiary of KfW Group, has been based in Cologne since its foundation in 1962. With its portfolio of around EUR 8.6 billion in over 80 countries it is one of the largest private-sector development financiers. DEG committed EUR 1.6 billion for investments of companies in developing and emerging-market countries in 2016 alone.
