City of San Diego Awards Skanska USD 57 Million Del Mar Infrastructure Project

(IN BRIEF) Skanska has secured a USD 57 million, approximately SEK 530 million, contract from the City of San Diego to expand the El Camino Real corridor in Del Mar, California. The project will widen El Camino Real to four lanes, replace the 84-year-old San Dieguito River Bridge, improve drainage and flood protection, stabilise riverbanks and introduce new separated bike lanes, sidewalks, traffic signals and an equestrian-friendly trail. The work is designed to improve mobility, safety and long-term resilience while strengthening connections between Del Mar, Solana Beach and nearby communities. Construction is scheduled to start in December 2026 and finish in August 2030.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 3-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Skanska has signed a USD 57 million contract, equivalent to approximately SEK 530 million, with the City of San Diego for the El Camino Real Half Mile to Via De La Valle Project in Del Mar, California.

The contract will be included in Skanska’s US order bookings for the third quarter of 2026.

The project will expand a heavily travelled section of El Camino Real by widening the corridor to four lanes and replacing the existing 84-year-old San Dieguito River Bridge.

Construction will also improve drainage infrastructure, reduce flooding risks and protect the corridor against future erosion along the San Dieguito River.

Additional riverbank stabilisation measures will strengthen the long-term resilience of the route.

Mobility and safety improvements planned

The project includes a broad range of transportation upgrades intended to improve mobility and safety for different types of road users.

Skanska will construct separated bicycle lanes, new sidewalks and upgraded traffic signalling infrastructure.

The project will also provide an equestrian-friendly trail beneath the new bridge.

Together, the improvements are designed to create safer and more efficient travel for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians.

The upgraded corridor will also provide a more reliable connection between Del Mar, Solana Beach and surrounding communities.

Construction scheduled through 2030

Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2026.

The project is expected to be completed in August 2030.

Once finished, the upgraded corridor is intended to improve transportation capacity while strengthening resilience to flooding and erosion in an area affected by the San Dieguito River.
