China Southern Airlines’ new Beijing airport base at Beijing Daxing Airport will use 177 escalator and elevator units from thyssenkrupp Elevator

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 17-Jun-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — thyssenkrupp Elevator will supply 22 escalators and 155 elevators (177 units) for the China Southern Airlines’ new Beijing airport base at Beijing Daxing Airport. China Southern Airlines has recently moved to a two-hub strategy and aside its current Guangzhou base the airline will now expand to Beijing Daxing Airport where its new base is under construction. The new mega airport is located in the south of Beijing and is a great example of expanded urban mobility.

State owned China Southern Airlines flew 4.42 million passengers from its Guangzhou base in 2018, and out of those nearly 1 million were the international transit passengers. The airline has seen an 8.6% increase of its passengers numbers as compared to 2017. China Southern Airlines is part of one of China’s biggest air carriers – China Southern Air Holding. The new Beijing Daxing Airport is planned to have a capacity of 45 million passengers in the first phase, before increasing further with the aim of ultimately becoming the largest airport worldwide by passenger numbers. Both airlines China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines will account for nearly 40% of the new airport’s traffic flow and at the beginning they will base 200 aircraft at the new site.

Architect Sir Norman Foster has designed the plans for the spectacular airport facilities while renowned Zaha Hadid Architects were responsible for the design of the hexagonal main terminal. The Beijing Daxing Airport’s main terminal boasts some 7.5 million sq. feet space and will indeed be the largest terminal in the world. Designed in a way for travelers to wave goodbye to their loved ones, even after they have passed through security as visitors will have a bird’s eye view that reaches beyond the security gates from the fifth-floor.

China Southern Airlines’ Beijing airport base development, spanning across 62-hectare, is the airline’s biggest investment to-date. The new Beijing Daxing Airport will boast Asia’s largest air traffic control centre, aircraft hangar, and airline catering centre.
