Centrica Business Solutions Partners with Carpenter Ltd to Install 1MW Solar Array, Transforming Unused Land into Green Energy Source

(IN BRIEF) Centrica Business Solutions has partnered with Carpenter Ltd to decarbonise its Glossop manufacturing site by installing a 1MW solar array on a previously unusable steep bank. The solar farm, set to generate 1,025 MWh annually, will cover 15% of the site’s energy needs and reduce carbon emissions by 116,150Kg CO2 in its first year. The project, delivered by Push Power, is expected to decrease electricity costs by 15% while supporting Carpenter Ltd’s broader sustainability and biodiversity goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) WINDSOR, 29-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Centrica Business Solutions has partnered with Carpenter Ltd, one of the world’s largest producers of cushioning products, to help decarbonise its Glossop manufacturing site through the installation of a cutting-edge solar energy solution. This collaboration focuses on transforming an unused, challenging space on the business’s premises into a green energy resource, with the installation of a 1MW solar array consisting of 1,666 panels on a steep bank that was previously deemed unsuitable for development.

The new solar array will generate 1,025 MWh of energy annually, meeting 15 percent of the site’s total energy consumption — equivalent to powering 380 homes. The project is expected to significantly reduce Carpenter Ltd’s carbon footprint, with an anticipated reduction of 116,150Kg of CO2 in its first year. In addition to its environmental benefits, the solar farm will reduce the company’s operational electricity costs by an estimated 15%, contributing to both its sustainability goals and financial performance.

The project is being executed by Push Power, Centrica Business Solutions’ solar EPC partner, known for its expertise in designing and implementing complex ground-mount systems. Push Power’s experience was critical in adapting the installation to the challenging terrain, as the solar array is being placed on a 14.62% gradient steep slope that was once used as landfill. This location, previously thought unusable, has now been transformed into a sustainable energy source.

Centrica Business Solutions worked closely with Carpenter Ltd to identify the optimal location for the solar technology. Due to the site’s ventilation requirements, the roof was not a viable option, but the steep bank presented an innovative solution. The project also includes biodiversity initiatives, with Carpenter Ltd aiming to meet the government’s requirement for a 10% biodiversity net gain. These efforts include the installation of badger gates and the planting of additional hedgerows to support local wildlife and enhance biodiversity on the site.

Oliver Evans, UKI General Manager at Centrica Business Solutions, commented, “The Carpenter Ltd project is a prime example of how we can transform underused spaces into valuable energy solutions. This solar installation will not only generate green electricity but also support long-term cost savings for the business. We’re excited to partner with Carpenter Ltd in this significant step towards their sustainability goals.”

Alan Hibbert, Divisional Manager UK at Carpenter Ltd, said, “We’re proud to be taking significant steps to reduce our environmental impact while supporting the picturesque Glossop countryside. The solar installation blends seamlessly into the landscape, providing us with resilience against rising energy costs and reducing our reliance on the grid.”

Andy Khan, Managing Director at Push Power Ltd, added, “This project showcases our ability to deliver bespoke solar solutions even in the most challenging environments. With 1,666 panels installed on a steep slope, we’ve ensured a design that fits naturally into the landscape while maintaining our rigorous health and safety standards throughout the installation. We’re proud to work alongside Centrica Business Solutions and Carpenter Ltd in achieving their renewable energy goals.”
