Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway Project Earns Global Recognition for Innovation and Excellence

(IN BRIEF) The Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway project in the Philippines has received prestigious recognition from the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). The project, which was inaugurated in 2022, won the “Project and Technology Awards 2023” in the “Innovation in Construction” category and was shortlisted in the “Large Road and Rail Bridges” category. It marks the first time a project has been selected in two categories at the IABSE awards. Sener, the reference engineering firm, played a key role in the preliminary and detailed design of the project and provided technical assistance during construction. The expressway, spanning 8.9 km over water, has greatly improved traffic management and connectivity in the region, easing congestion on existing bridges and connecting Cebu City to the international airport on Mactan Island.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 11-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — The Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway, in the Philippines, has been recognized by the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) in two categories. Sener was the reference engineering in the preliminary and detailed design of the project, also providing technical assistance during the construction.

The Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway project (Philippines) has been the winner of the “Project and Technology Awards 2023” of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), in the “Innovation in Construction” category. Likewise, it was shortlisted in the “Large Road and Rail Bridges” category, being the first time that the same project was selected in two categories in these prestigious awards, of global recognition.

The awards ceremony took place in Zurich, headquarters of the IABSE, a scientific-technical association formed by members from 100 countries, with 58 delegations around the world. Founded in 1929, its objective is to promote the exchange of knowledge in the practice of structural engineering throughout the world, for the service of professionals in the sector and society.

The infrastructure, inaugurated in 2022, has greatly benefited traffic management in the area, easing congestion on existing bridges by connecting Cebu City – the most important economic and trade center in the Philippines after its capital, Manila – with the international airport on the island of Mactan through Córdova.

Sener was the reference engineering in the preliminary and detailed design of the project, also providing technical assistance during the construction. It is a road approximately 8.9 km long that connects the islands of Cebu and Mactan-Cordova, in the Philippines, and runs entirely over water. The road meets a high standard of safety, comfort and speed and contributes to decongesting traffic on existing bridges. The technical challenges of the project are an example of Sener’s technical solvency in technically complex projects: it is an entire construction on the sea, in an area of high seismicity, also affected by strong winds.
