Carmeuse CEO Highlights Need for Stronger EU Regulations to Support Decarbonation of Hard-to-Abate Sectors at Clean Industrial Deal Event

(IN BRIEF) At the one-year anniversary of the Antwerp Declaration, 400 industry leaders gathered in Antwerp to discuss the Clean Industrial Deal with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other key Commissioners. Tim Van den Bossche, CEO of Carmeuse Europe, emphasized the need for Europe to stay competitive while transitioning to sustainable industry. He highlighted the importance of investments in CCUS technologies, low-carbon energy, and supportive regulatory frameworks for hard-to-abate sectors like lime. Van den Bossche also called for EU regulations to recognize the potential for recarbonation in the lime sector, advocating for further discussions with the Commission to address the regulatory gap.

(PRESS RELEASE) ANDENNE, 4-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — One year after the launch of the Antwerp Declaration, which outlined the industrial vision for restoring Europe’s prosperity, 400 industry leaders from across Europe gathered in Antwerp to engage with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and key Commissioners overseeing industrial policy. The event focused on the Clean Industrial Deal and the steps necessary to drive Europe’s transition to a sustainable industrial future.

Tim Van den Bossche, CEO of Carmeuse Europe, Middle East, and Asia, participated in a roundtable discussion where he stressed the urgent need for Europe to maintain its industrial competitiveness while embracing decarbonization. He pointed out that investments in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies, as well as the development of supportive regulatory frameworks and affordable low-carbon energy, are essential for enabling progress in hard-to-abate sectors.

In particular, Van den Bossche emphasized the unique potential within the lime sector for product recarbonation, but noted that current EU regulations fail to recognize this opportunity. He called for the creation of incentives to promote recarbonation and urged the EU Commission to engage in discussions with industry representatives, including Carmeuse’s EU association, EuLA, to address the existing regulatory gap.

“The time to act is now,” said Van den Bossche. “Europe cannot afford to delay the necessary steps to support sustainable industrial development. We need an efficient and forward-thinking regulatory framework to ensure we meet our decarbonation targets while maintaining Europe’s industrial strength.”

The discussions at the event are set to shape the future of Europe’s industrial policy and drive the next phase of Europe’s sustainable industrial transformation.
