Bundeswehr Orders Further Mobile Medical Stations From Rheinmetall in €500 Million Deal

(IN BRIEF) Rheinmetall will supply the Bundeswehr with 149 additional mobile rescue stations in protected and unprotected versions under a framework contract awarded at the end of 2024, with the new call-off valued at more than €500 million. Booked in July 2026, the order raises the total number of rescue stations to 165 systems and the combined gross value to more than €600 million, with production scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The systems form part of the Bundeswehr’s Modular Medical Facilities capability and are designed to provide highly mobile initial emergency medical care for troops, with each station comprising two independently operable containers equipped with generators, air conditioning, an emergency treatment station and four additional treatment stations. Rheinmetall said the design reflects lessons from the war in Ukraine, particularly the need for rapidly deployable medical support, and replaces a complex tent structure with a modular container system manufactured by Rheinmetall Mobile Systeme GmbH that can be transported and set up in more challenging terrain.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 17-Aug-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Rheinmetall will supply additional mobile rescue stations to the Bundeswehr under an extension of a previous order, with the new call-off covering 149 protected and unprotected systems.

The order has a gross value of more than €500 million and was placed under a framework contract awarded at the end of 2024.

Rheinmetall said the call-off is the largest order to date received by Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH.

Production of the additional rescue stations is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

With the order booked in July 2026, the total number of rescue stations ordered rises to 165 systems, with a combined gross value of more than €600 million.

In December 2024, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support, known as BAAINBw, commissioned Rheinmetall to supply up to 137 rescue stations to the Bundeswehr.

The initial order included ten ballistically protected systems and six unprotected systems.

The framework contract also includes options for further armoured and unarmoured systems.

Training for the relevant Bundeswehr personnel will also be provided as part of the programme.

The rescue stations form part of the Bundeswehr’s Modular Medical Facilities system.

Within the Bundeswehr’s medical service, the highly mobile stations are designed to provide troops with initial emergency medical care.

The systems can be set up and dismantled by four soldiers within a very short time if required.

Rheinmetall said the emphasis on highly mobile systems reflects lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, where mobility has become a critical requirement for medical support in military operations.

Each rescue station consists of two containers, which can be operated either together or separately.

Each container is equipped with a generator and air conditioning and can operate independently for several days.

If one generator fails, the full system can continue operating using the generator from a single container.

The system includes a fully equipped emergency treatment station as well as four additional treatment stations.

All medical equipment is mounted on Airliner rails, enabling configuration according to user requirements.

The rescue stations can be transported using different carrier vehicles already used by the Bundeswehr.

They can also be set up on both longitudinal and transverse inclines.

A custom lifting system was developed for this purpose because no off-the-shelf system met the specified operational requirements.

The Bundeswehr is procuring both protected and unprotected versions of the rescue station.

The programme involves the refurbishment of an existing system, while replacing a complex tent structure with a highly modular 3:1 container manufactured by Rheinmetall Mobile Systeme GmbH.

The new container-based system is designed to be transported and deployed in more challenging terrain.

Through the additional order, Rheinmetall is strengthening its role as a supplier of deployable medical infrastructure for the Bundeswehr, supporting the armed forces with mobile, modular and resilient systems for emergency medical care in operational environments.
