Bosch Rolls Out Real-Time Road Hazard Alerts for Millions of Vehicles to Boost Road Safety

(IN BRIEF) Bosch has expanded its real-time road hazard service, now available in millions of vehicles and soon to be introduced to Mercedes-Benz Trucks. The service uses data from connected vehicles and third-party sources to warn drivers of hazards like slippery roads, poor visibility, and wrong-way drivers, helping to prevent accidents. It also integrates with Bosch’s connected map services, optimizing automated driving and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for enhanced road safety.

(PRESS RELEASE) STUTTGART, 10-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Bosch is taking a significant leap in road safety with the expansion of its real-time road hazard service, now available in millions of passenger cars across Europe and set to be introduced to Mercedes-Benz Trucks by December 2024. The service provides drivers with early warnings of hazardous conditions, such as slippery roads, poor visibility, wrong-way drivers, and accidents, aiming to prevent critical situations before they arise.

The road hazard service operates through Bosch’s advanced cloud-based system, which collects anonymized data from a global fleet of connected vehicles, as well as third-party sources like weather services and road operators. This data includes local temperature, windshield wiper activity, and activation of fog lights, which is then analyzed using fusion algorithms. The system can detect risks like aquaplaning, dense fog, or even an oncoming wrong-way driver and send immediate alerts to drivers. For commercial vehicles, this service also offers the ability to reroute trucks in real-time to avoid hazards and optimize delivery routes.

“With this service, drivers receive timely warnings, improving road safety and helping to prevent accidents before they occur,” said Dr. Markus Heyn, Bosch board member and chairman of the Mobility business sector. “For commercial vehicles, it goes beyond safety—offering more efficient navigation and rerouting options to avoid sudden dangers.”

This cutting-edge service is part of Bosch’s broader connected map services, which aim to optimize advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle technology. Connected map services offer real-time data that can help automated vehicles adapt to environmental conditions, such as calculating the optimal speed in a traffic circle or determining lane geometry at complex intersections. These features allow automated vehicles to make more natural, predictive decisions, even in poor visibility or challenging conditions.

The road hazard service, combined with Bosch’s suite of connected technologies, plays a critical role in enabling safer, smarter, and more efficient transportation. With plans to roll out this service to even more vehicles globally, Bosch continues to push the boundaries of vehicle safety and automation, offering both enhanced driver convenience and a significant reduction in road accidents.
