Bernhard Eitel Re-Elected Rector of Universität Heidelberg

Senate members voted for the 53-year-old with large majority

20-12-2012 — /europawire.eu/ — Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel is to serve as Rector of Heidelberg University for another six years. The 53-year-old scientist was re-elected by a large majority of the senate in their meeting on 11 December 2012. He had already been recommended unanimously for a second term by the University Council in consultation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Baden-Württemberg. Confirmation by the Senate is required for appointment by the Minister-President. Prof. Eitel’s second term begins on 1 October 2013.

Bernhard Eitel (born 1959) studied geography and German language and literature at Karlsruhe University (TH). He earned his doctorate in 1989 from the University of Stuttgart with a thesis in geography and habilitated there in 1994. He was an assistant professor at the Institute of Geography at Stuttgart before taking on a professorship at the University of Passau in 1995. He then accepted a professorship of physical geography at Heidelberg University in 2001 after turning down appointments at the universities of Göttingen and Bayreuth. Prof. Eitel is a member of a number of academic organisations. His research interests include geomorphology, soil geography, geoecology, arid environments and geoarchaeology. Prior to his initial election to the post of rector in 2007, Prof. Eitel was already involved in various areas of academic self-administration, i.e. as Dean of the Combined Faculties of Natural and Mathematical Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences.
