Beiersdorf Strengthens Eucerin Derma Business With New Microbiome Technology for Acne-Prone Skin

(IN BRIEF) Beiersdorf is strengthening its Derma business with the launch of Eucerin DERMOPURE CLINICAL PROBIOM8, a new skin care approach for acne-prone skin based on viable, skin-native probiotics. The product features the patented cosmetic active ingredient TopiC.A™, containing two dormant bacterial strains that are activated as part of the PROBIOM8 routine to support a balanced skin microbiome. The innovation builds on more than 20 years of microbiome research, over 120 proprietary studies, an extensive patent portfolio and expertise added through the 2022 acquisition of S-Biomedic. Beiersdorf is targeting a global acne-prone skin care market that reached €4.6 billion in retail sales in 2025 after growing approximately 8.8% between 2020 and 2025, with around one in five people worldwide affected by acne-prone skin.

(PRESS RELEASE) HAMBURG, 2-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Beiersdorf is expanding its dermatological skin care business with the launch of Eucerin DERMOPURE CLINICAL PROBIOM8, a new approach for acne-prone skin based on viable, skin-native probiotics.

The innovation builds on more than 20 years of microbiome research and uses a patented cosmetic active ingredient designed to support a balanced skin microbiome rather than broadly targeting bacteria.

Beiersdorf said the launch creates new growth opportunities for Eucerin in one of the world’s largest skin care categories while demonstrating how long-term scientific research can be translated into consumer products.

Burcu Andreae-Nehlsen, Brand President Derma & Healthcare at Beiersdorf, said DERMOPURE CLINICAL PROBIOM8 represents more than a conventional product launch.

She said the innovation demonstrates how Beiersdorf converts sustained investment in research and development into cosmetic solutions relevant to consumers.

Andreae-Nehlsen added that the product gives Eucerin new opportunities in a category affecting millions of people worldwide.

Acne-prone skin represents a growing global category

The global market for products designed for acne-prone skin grew by approximately 8.8% between 2020 and 2025, reaching retail sales of €4.6 billion in 2025, according to Euromonitor data cited by Beiersdorf.

Around one in five people worldwide are affected by acne-prone skin.

The prevalence rises to 28.3% among people aged 16 to 24 and remains at 19.3% among adults aged 25 to 39, according to research cited by the company.

Beiersdorf is targeting this long-standing consumer need through a microbiome-based approach intended to work more closely with the skin’s natural biology.

TopiC.A™ uses viable skin-native probiotics

At the centre of DERMOPURE CLINICAL PROBIOM8 is Beiersdorf’s patented cosmetic active ingredient TopiC.A™.

The ingredient contains two viable, skin-native bacterial strains maintained in a dormant state.

When activated as part of the PROBIOM8 routine, the probiotics are designed to support a balanced skin microbiome.

While many existing skin care approaches act broadly against microorganisms, TopiC.A™ uses carefully selected bacterial strains that naturally occur on healthy-looking skin.

Beiersdorf said the technology represents a targeted approach based on understanding and working with the skin’s microbial ecosystem.

More than two decades of microbiome research

The technology behind DERMOPURE CLINICAL PROBIOM8 draws on more than 20 years of microbiome research, more than 120 studies, a broad patent portfolio and additional expertise gained through Beiersdorf’s 2022 acquisition of life science company S-Biomedic.

The company said the launch illustrates how it combines internal scientific research with targeted strategic investments to turn discoveries into commercially relevant innovations.

Dr. Gitta Neufang, Chief R&D Officer at Beiersdorf, said the company’s innovation philosophy begins with understanding the skin and developing cosmetic products that work in sync with its biology.

She said research into the skin microbiome has significantly expanded Beiersdorf’s scientific understanding and created new possibilities for future skin care development.

Neufang described the microbiome as one of the most promising areas of dermatological research and an important component of the next generation of science-based skin care.

Beiersdorf expands microbiome capabilities

Beiersdorf traces the scientific foundations of its microbiome work to Prof. Dr. Paul Gerson Unna, who was the first to identify a bacterium in skin blemishes.

The company has conducted research into the skin microbiome since the 1990s and began developing prebiotic and probiotic skin care approaches from 2005.

Since 2014, Beiersdorf has conducted more than 120 proprietary microbiome studies, supported by scientific publications and an extensive patent portfolio.

Its Microbiome Design Platform brings together prebiotic, probiotic and antimicrobial approaches for cosmetic product development.

Beiersdorf further expanded its capabilities in this field through the acquisition of S-Biomedic in 2022.
