BASF Introduces REDcert²-Certified Additives to Help Reduce Coatings Carbon Footprint

(IN BRIEF) BASF is expanding its certified biomass-balanced additives portfolio for architectural coatings with three new products: Dispex® AA 4145 MB, Rheovis® PU 1333 MB and Rheovis® HS 1169 MB. Certified according to REDcert², the additives are designed to help coatings manufacturers reduce the product carbon footprint of their formulations compared with formulations using the respective conventional BASF additives. The biomass balance approach replaces fossil-based raw materials with certified renewable resources at the start of the value chain, with renewable content attributed to the product through an externally certified mass balance method. The resulting products offer the same performance as conventional alternatives, enabling lower-carbon formulations without reformulation. Dispex® AA 4145 MB supports pigment wetting for high-quality finishes, while Rheovis® PU 1333 MB and Rheovis® HS 1169 MB provide rheology control and consistent application properties. The products are available globally and are supported by BASF’s technical expertise.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 13-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF is expanding its certified biomass-balanced additives portfolio for architectural coatings with the launch of three new products: Dispex® AA 4145 MB, Rheovis® PU 1333 MB and Rheovis® HS 1169 MB.

The additives are certified according to the REDcert² standard and are designed to help coatings manufacturers reduce the product carbon footprint of their formulations compared with formulations using the corresponding conventional BASF additives.

At the same time, the new biomass-balanced products deliver the same performance level as their conventionally produced equivalents, allowing manufacturers to pursue lower-carbon formulations without reformulation challenges.

BASF’s biomass balance approach helps reduce demand for fossil feedstock by replacing fossil-based raw materials with certified renewable resources at the beginning of the value chain. A corresponding amount of renewable content is then attributed to the final product through a certified mass balance method.

The resulting biomass-balanced products have the same properties as conventional BASF products, while offering a reduced product carbon footprint according to BASF’s PCF methodology.

Sylvain Huguenard, Global Vice President, Additives at BASF, said the new products are intended to support coatings manufacturers seeking to lower the carbon footprint of their formulations while maintaining proven performance.

In architectural coatings, Dispex® AA 4145 MB supports optimised pigment wetting for high-quality finishes. Rheovis® PU 1333 MB and Rheovis® HS 1169 MB provide controlled rheology and application behaviour across a broad range of formulations.

The new additives are available globally and are supported by BASF’s technical expertise to help customers integrate them into existing systems.

BASF defines product carbon footprint as the sum of greenhouse gas emissions and removals of selected processes in a product system, expressed as CO₂ equivalents and based on selected life cycle stages or processes, in line with ISO 14067:2018.

For biomass-balanced products, BASF replaces 100% of the fossil raw materials needed to produce the product with renewable resources in its Verbund production setup. While the renewable carbon cannot be physically identified in the final product, the renewable share is fully attributed to the product through an externally certified mass balance approach. Chain-of-custody models, including mass balance, are defined by ISO standard 22095.
