Barry Callebaut joins the Sustainable Coconut Partnership to promote responsible production

(IN BRIEF) Barry Callebaut, a leading chocolate manufacturer, has announced its participation as a founding member of the Sustainable Coconut Partnership, an industry platform aimed at promoting responsible coconut production and market transformation at scale. The Sustainable Coconut Partnership seeks to address significant challenges in coconut production, particularly in sourcing countries such as the Philippines, where farmers face numerous hurdles that threaten their livelihoods, including limited access to finance, poor agricultural practices, extreme weather events, lack of access to technology, and limited market knowledge. The initiative brings together buyers, processors, and other actors actively involved in the coconut supply chain to collaboratively find solutions and share investment approaches that establish cost-effective sustainable coconut value chains and support farmers’ livelihoods. The Sustainable Coconut Partnership aims to drive positive impacts for farmers’ livelihoods, the climate, and the environment, and promote sustainable coconut production practices through the Sustainable Coconut Charter.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZURICH, 26-Apr-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Barry Callebaut Group (SWX: BARN), Switzerland-based cocoa processor and chocolate manufacturer, has announced its role as a founding member of the Sustainable Coconut Partnership, an industry platform aimed at promoting responsible coconut production and market transformation at scale.

Coconut trees offer significant benefits to the environment, economy, and communities that rely on them, making sustainable coconut production a critical topic in the chocolate industry. However, the global coconut supply is declining, and farmers in sourcing countries such as the Philippines, who are mostly smallholders, face significant challenges that threaten their livelihoods. These challenges include limited access to finance, poor agricultural practices, extreme weather events, lack of access to technology, and limited market knowledge, which are compounded by fragmented supply chains.

When Barry Callebaut began its journey to source 100% sustainable coconut oil, the company discovered a clear gap in what a sustainable coconut supply chain should look like. In 2019, Barry Callebaut partnered with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Green Invest Asia to bring together buyers, processors, and other actors involved in the coconut supply chain to create the first Roundtable on Sustainable Coconut & Coconut Oil. Through a series of meetings, participants collaborated to identify solutions and share investment approaches to establish cost-effective sustainable coconut value chains that support farmers’ livelihoods.

The Sustainable Coconut Partnership aims to address these challenges and promote sustainable coconut production practices through the Sustainable Coconut Charter. Barry Callebaut is proud to be a founding member of this industry-led platform that catalyzes industry transformation towards a responsible and resilient coconut sector that supports farmers’ livelihoods and the environment.

Through the Sustainable Coconut Charter, the Sustainable Coconut Partnership outlines areas of focus, principles, and expected outcomes for sustainability programs in coconut supply chains. The initiative brings together buyers, processors, and other actors actively involved in the coconut supply chain to collaboratively find solutions and share investment approaches that establish cost-effective sustainable coconut value chains and support farmers’ livelihoods.

Barry Callebaut is proud to be a founding member of the Sustainable Coconut Partnership and continues to lead the way in promoting sustainable practices in the chocolate industry.
