Barco’s 2,800 lumens training and simulation projector now features Sony’s new LCoS technology, quadrupling contrast ratio

Xenia, Ohio, USA, 30-11-2012 — / — Barco, a world leader in professional visualization, is the premier beneficiary of Sony Corporation’s new LCoS technology which will boost the contrast ratio of Barco’s newest 2,800 lumens SIM 7 series projector from 10,000:1 to 40,000:1. This ultra-high contrast significantly increases the realism of immersive simulator training, especially for night vision training of new pilots. The new Barco SIM 7Q-HC will be demonstrated at I/ITSEC from December 3-6 in Orlando, Florida at the Barco booth #1763.

Reduced budgets and a demand for increased training effectiveness are fueling the growth of virtual training for pilots. In response to the need for more cost-effective visualization solutions, Barco has developed the SIM 7Q-HC, an enhancement of its flagship simulation projector, the SIM 7Q, which is recognized as an industry-leading projector for use in immersive training.

“We are very excited to see our newest high contrast SXRD LCoS panel being implemented into the Barco SIM 7Q HC series” says Dr. Shunichi Hashimoto, Senior General Manager of Sony’s Display Device Business division. “Together with Barco, we have optimized this SXRD LCoS panel specifically for the usage in Barco’s cutting-edge simulation projectors.”

The new SIM 7Q-HC with enhanced contrast ratio will create a more lifelike flight environment for all scenarios, dramatically improving the effectiveness of night-time simulation training. The incorporation of Sony’s latest LCoS panels and Barco’s proprietary ECR aperture and CCD dimmer technology allow the 2,800 lumens SIM 7Q-HC to achieve a total dynamic range of over 20 million:1. This results in more accurate simulation of low light environments, which is critical for training pilots in modern flight strategies.

Barco’s simulation visuals are widely known for their simplicity, stability and reliability in addition to ease of installation and integration. The new projector is an ideal fit for Barco’s domed and collimated displays. “We are continually striving to create the most authentic, immersive experience to keep pilots in training safely on the ground until they’re fully prepared for actual flight,” commented Frank Timmermans, Barco Training and Simulation’s CEO. ”Sony has once again enhanced its outstanding LCoS technology and has exceeded the already high benchmark for simulation contrast ratio. This allows us to optimize our projectors for the most realistic flight experience.”
