Barclays to participate in the Payments Council’s mobile payment service scheme Paym

LONDON, UK, 11-3-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — Barclays confirms it will participate in the Payments Council’s mobile payment service scheme Paym, following an announcement today.

The initiative will allow customers to send and receive payments using just a mobile number to users across a number of UK banks and building societies participating in the scheme. Paym will be available via the existing Barclays Pingit app when the launch date is announced in April.

Darren Foulds, Barclays Mobile Banking and Pingit Product Director said: “As a leader in mobile banking innovation following the launch of Barclays Pingit in February 2012, Barclays is pleased to offer customers an additional way for mobile payments, widening access for all. Customers can still use Pingit in conjunction with Paym. We welcome the Payments Council’s initiative which aims to bring the rest of the industry up to date by offering consumers a simple, convenient way to make payments from current accounts. We have seen increased customer demand for mobile payments via the Pingit app and are confident our customers will use both methods to suit their needs.”

Barclays Pingit is available to both customers and non-customers. Since launch in February 2012, Pingit has over 2.5mdownloads and over £350m has been sent through the service. In February 2014 Barclays saw an increase in Pingit downloads by 149% compared to February 2013.
