Alderman of Sport Rabin Baldewsingh: “Sportcampus Zuiderpark is an iconic building to the city. Our green lung, the Zuiderpark, has a new hart. The exterior of the building almost has a futuristic look about it. And the roof is filled with 5,000m2 of solar panels and collectors.”

The complex not only holds solar panels, but also hottubes to supply warm water. Heating and cooling is provided by a storage system of heat and cold with a spring at 250 meters below ground. The entire building uses LED-lighting. Each sport has its own adjustable lighting level. To top it off, the roof is covered with green sedum and there are grass tiles around the building.

Grand opening

The grand opening also included the combination of sports and students. Mayor Krikke received pieces of a puzzle from athletes of all parts of the city. Beach volleyball players Robert Meeuwsen and Alexander Brouwer brought her the key to the complex
