BAE Systems Debuts First UAS‑Launched Precision Munition, Hitting Air and Ground Targets Flawlessly

(IN BRIEF) BAE Systems conducted the first-ever launch of APKWS-guided munitions from a multi-rotor UAS during trials at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. Using the SURVICE TRV‑150 drone, engineers integrated the APKWS laser-guidance kit—traditionally used on manned aircraft—to convert unguided rockets into precision weapons. The tests achieved perfect accuracy against both air and ground targets, highlighting a low-cost, scalable strike and counter‑UAS solution. Developed through a UK–US partnership with SURVICE Engineering, the system will be further enhanced with autonomous features for battlefield readiness.

(PRESS RELEASE) FARNBOROUGH, 17-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — In a groundbreaking demonstration at the US Army’s Dugway Proving Ground, BAE Systems successfully launched precision-guided munitions from a multi-rotor Uncrewed Air System (UAS) for the first time, achieving direct hits on both aerial and ground targets. Utilizing BAE Systems’ APKWS® laser‑guidance kit—formerly exclusive to platforms like the F‑16, F‑18, and AH‑64 Apache—mounted on the SURVICE TRV‑150 (a Marine Corps–configured Malloy T‑150), these trials underscore a cost‑effective strike and counter‑UAS capability for front‑line troops.

BAE Systems’ UK-based weapons integration teams seamlessly adapted the APKWS kit onto the TRV‑150, converting standard rockets into precision munitions. The modified drone not only exceeded performance expectations—demonstrating flawless target engagement with zero misses—but also validated the platform’s multi-role potential in modern combat scenarios.

“This marks a pivotal advancement in delivering affordable, highly effective tactical options to our customers,” said Anthony Gregory, Business Development Director at BAE Systems’ FalconWorks®. “By harnessing UAS technology, we’re empowering forces to stay ahead on an ever-evolving battlefield.”

Greg Thompson, President of SURVICE Engineering, added: “Equipping a logistics drone with strike capability transforms an existing asset into a force multiplier, extending engagement range beyond ground-launched systems and offering rapid deployment at the front lines.”

This achievement was made possible through close collaboration between BAE Systems FalconWorks®, BAE Systems, Inc., and SURVICE Engineering. The team will now refine the system—integrating advanced autonomy—to prepare for operational deployment.
