(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 8-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Aviva’s latest Group Protection Claims and Wellbeing Insight Report, published today, highlights the critical role of Group Income Protection in supporting employees’ return to work following illness. The report reveals that in 2024, Aviva’s vocational rehabilitation services helped over 2,600 employees from 292 employers, marking the highest number of employers supported in a single year.

The report demonstrates that 86% of employees who received vocational rehabilitation support successfully returned to work, underscoring the effectiveness of Aviva’s early intervention programs and the comprehensive rehabilitation services provided.

Mental Health and Cancer Pathways Remain Key Focus Areas

Mental health remains the leading focus of Aviva’s rehabilitation efforts, accounting for nearly half (47%) of all referrals for support. Aviva’s mental health services, including counseling, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and psychotherapy, played a pivotal role in helping 96% of individuals return to work within the policy’s deferred period.

Cancer-related claims also saw a rise, accounting for 13% of all rehabilitation cases in 2024, up from 9% in the previous year. Aviva’s Cancer Pathway, offering support from diagnosis through treatment and recovery, helped 82% of cancer survivors return to or remain in work, providing essential emotional support, fatigue management, and dietary advice.

Musculoskeletal and Neurodiversity Pathways Show Significant Impact

Musculoskeletal claims represented 10% of all rehabilitation cases, with nearly all (97%) individuals successfully returning to work within the deferred period thanks to Aviva’s specialist support. The company’s Neurodiversity Pathway also grew significantly, with 6% of all referrals in 2024 related to neurodivergent conditions, up from 3% in 2023. This pathway offers workplace adjustments, coaching, and manager training, ensuring a supportive and inclusive environment for neurodivergent employees.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services Drive Positive Outcomes

Jason Ellis, Distribution Director for Aviva Group Protection, emphasized the importance of vocational rehabilitation in Group Income Protection policies: “Our rehabilitation services are designed to help individuals recover and reintegrate into the workplace while ensuring they feel supported throughout their journey. By empowering employees to overcome health challenges, we enable them to either stay at work or return when they are ready. This not only benefits the employees but also helps employers maintain a healthier, more stable workforce.”

The report underscores that vocational rehabilitation, alongside group income protection, provides significant benefits on both a societal and personal level. It helps foster a sense of purpose and financial security for employees while promoting a healthier, more productive workforce.
