Atos Research Shows Extended Device Lifespans Could Slash Workplace Emissions and Boost IT Sustainability

(IN BRIEF) Atos’s latest research highlights the environmental advantages of extending device lifespans in workplaces, showing that a data-driven, condition-based approach can prolong device use to 8-10 years, significantly reducing carbon emissions. The study reveals that a simple shift from a three-year to a four-year device refresh cycle could reduce emissions by 25%, with most laptops eligible for remanufacturing. Additionally, 75% of employees are willing to keep devices longer if they understand the environmental benefits, underscoring the role of awareness in sustainability. Atos emphasizes that real-time data and sustainable IT practices can drive substantial improvements in environmental impact.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 4-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Atos has released new research emphasizing the sustainability benefits of extending device lifecycles, presenting a data-driven, condition-based approach that can prolong device use to 8-10 years compared to the standard 3-5 year refresh cycle. The report, titled “Increasing digital workplace sustainability: Data-driven strategy to accelerate progress together,” highlights the environmental impact of IT device manufacturing, where nearly 79% of a laptop’s carbon footprint is generated before use. Atos suggests that simply shifting from a three-year to a four-year refresh cycle could reduce emissions by 25% without affecting performance.

The study also shows high potential for remanufacturing, with 76% of large organizations’ laptops suitable for remanufacture and the rest viable for refurbishment or recycling. Furthermore, employee engagement could play a vital role in sustainability; 75% of employees expressed a willingness to keep their devices longer if they understood the environmental benefits.

The report indicates that up to 57% of the ICT sector’s carbon emissions come from workplace devices. Leon Gilbert, Senior Vice President of Digital Workplace at Atos, remarked on the significant insights gleaned from analyzing 28.5 million devices, highlighting opportunities to enhance both financial and environmental value while maintaining user satisfaction.

David Welling, IT Sustainability Governance Lead at National Grid, echoed the findings, emphasizing how IT data could inform energy usage patterns, similar to charging electric vehicles during off-peak hours. He noted that aligning ICT usage with energy demand could create significant emissions reductions.

Atos’s report advocates that sustainable workplace management doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming, and the company stresses the value of real-time data in achieving environmental goals. With its focus on sustainable digital workplace solutions, Atos provides services across employee collaboration, data analytics, and customer care, recognized by Gartner as a leader in Outsourced Digital Workplace Services.
