Announced at the International Space Summit, the agreement will see Arianespace launch Nyx on its first demonstration mission for the European Space Agency (ESA) under the ALADDIN initiative — Autonomous LEO Accelerated Demo Docking to ISS Node.

The mission is intended to contribute to the development of an autonomous European capability for transporting cargo to and from low Earth orbit (LEO) while demonstrating how Europe’s Ariane 6 launch system can work alongside a new generation of European-built orbital transportation vehicles.

Nyx to fly aboard Ariane 64 from Europe’s Spaceport

Under the agreement, Arianespace will launch Nyx using Ariane 64, the four-booster configuration of Ariane 6.

The mission will depart from the Guiana Space Centre, also known as Europe’s Spaceport, in Kourou.

After deployment into low Earth orbit, Nyx will continue its mission autonomously, demonstrating capabilities that form part of The Exploration Company’s broader vision for reusable orbital transportation.

The flight represents an important development milestone for Nyx and brings together a new European spacecraft with Europe’s heavy-lift launch capability.

ALADDIN initiative targets autonomous European orbital transportation

The demonstration mission forms part of ESA’s ALADDIN programme, which focuses on developing and demonstrating autonomous capabilities for operations in low Earth orbit.

The initiative’s full name, Autonomous LEO Accelerated Demo Docking to ISS Node, reflects the programme’s focus on technologies associated with autonomous orbital transportation and docking.

Through the Nyx mission, The Exploration Company will demonstrate capabilities intended to contribute to a European system for transporting cargo into orbit and returning it safely to Earth.

The programme comes as European institutional and commercial organisations pursue greater capability across the full space transportation chain.

Nyx designed as reusable vehicle for cargo transport

Developed by The Exploration Company, Nyx is a reusable space vehicle designed initially to carry cargo to and from low Earth orbit.

The company is developing a broader space transportation architecture that includes reusable capsules and high-thrust propulsion technologies.

Nyx has been designed around flexibility, allowing the spacecraft to support different launch systems, mission destinations and customer requirements.

This adaptability is intended to allow the vehicle to operate across a variety of institutional and commercial mission profiles as demand for orbital transportation develops.

Mission links European launch and orbital transportation capabilities

The Arianespace agreement highlights growing connections between established European launch infrastructure and emerging spacecraft companies developing new services in orbit.

Ariane 6 provides the initial access to space, while Nyx is intended to perform transportation and autonomous operations after separation from the launch vehicle.

Together, these capabilities illustrate a more integrated European space ecosystem that encompasses launch, orbital transportation and spacecraft services.

The companies said the partnership demonstrates how Ariane 6 can complement emerging generations of spacecraft being developed across Europe.

David Cavaillolès highlights Ariane 6 mission flexibility

David Cavaillolès, CEO of Arianespace, welcomed The Exploration Company’s decision to select Arianespace and Ariane 6 for the next stage of the Nyx programme.

He said the mission demonstrates the strength of Europe’s space ecosystem and its capacity to develop new orbital services.

Cavaillolès highlighted Ariane 6’s design flexibility, noting that the launcher was developed to accommodate a broad range of missions and customers.

He said Arianespace is pleased to support an ambitious European spacecraft programme as Nyx advances toward its first mission.

The Exploration Company emphasises flexible launch architecture

Najwa Naimy, President of The Exploration Company and Chief Program Officer, Nyx, said flexibility has been a central design principle for the spacecraft from the beginning.

Nyx is intended to operate with different launch systems and support varying destinations and customer needs rather than depending on a single mission architecture.

Naimy said the company is pleased to have chosen Arianespace as launch provider for Nyx’s first flight.

She added that the mission combines the experience of an established European launch provider with the ambitions of a new generation of spacecraft being developed in Europe.

Agreement supports Europe’s emerging in-orbit services sector

The Nyx launch adds to Arianespace’s activities supporting both institutional and commercial organisations developing new generations of space services.

The market for orbital transportation is expanding beyond conventional satellite deployment as companies and agencies examine services including cargo delivery, docking, return-to-Earth capability and other in-space operations.

The Nyx programme represents one such emerging capability, focused on reusable transportation that can support missions in low Earth orbit.

Arianespace said the agreement demonstrates its ability to support this broader evolution of the space market.

Reusability central to The Exploration Company’s strategy

The Exploration Company is developing Nyx as part of a reusable transportation system intended to reduce reliance on expendable spacecraft for future orbital missions.

The vehicle is designed to carry cargo into space and return safely, creating the possibility of repeated missions.

In the longer term, the company says its technology roadmap is intended to support transportation not only of cargo but ultimately of people.

Its activities also include development of high-thrust engines as part of what it describes as a full-stack approach to space transportation.

The Exploration Company expands internationally

Founded in 2021 by Hélène Huby and a team of aerospace veterans, The Exploration Company operates as a global space company with European roots.

It serves both space agencies and commercial operators and is backed by venture investors.

The company is expanding across locations in Europe, the United States and the UAE, reflecting its ambition to serve an international customer base while developing spacecraft technologies from a European foundation.

Ariane 6 broadens mission portfolio beyond satellite launches

The Nyx agreement demonstrates a mission profile for Ariane 6 extending beyond traditional satellite deployment.

While Ariane 6 serves institutional spacecraft, telecommunications satellites and satellite constellations, missions involving reusable orbital transportation vehicles create an additional category of launch opportunity.

The launcher’s ability to support different mission architectures is intended to provide Arianespace with flexibility as the commercial and institutional space markets evolve.

The Exploration Company mission will showcase this versatility by pairing Ariane 64 with an autonomous reusable spacecraft designed for operations after reaching low Earth orbit.

Partnership reinforces integrated European space ecosystem

The agreement brings together two complementary capabilities within Europe’s space sector: independent launch services and emerging reusable space transportation.

By using Ariane 6 to deploy Nyx for an ESA-backed demonstration, the mission connects European institutional support, launch infrastructure and commercial spacecraft development.

The collaboration is intended to help build practical experience that could support future European cargo transportation services and other orbital missions.

For Arianespace, it also reinforces the company’s role in enabling both established and emerging participants in the international space economy.
