(PRESS RELEASE) DÜBENDORF, 26-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a stunning blend of science and creativity, two apprentice physics laboratory technicians from Empa, Silvio Müller and Yanis Strüby, have developed a Tesla coil that not only generates lightning but also plays music. Their innovative project earned them both the jury and participant awards at the «Züri-Oberland» apprentice competition in Wetzikon.

Tesla coils are known for producing spectacular lightning displays, but Müller and Strüby wanted to take the concept a step further by incorporating music into the experience. The duo spent months researching, planning, and meticulously crafting the coil by hand, including winding nearly 350 meters of thin copper wire around the coil. The result was a unique creation that captivated both experts and peers at the competition.

The journey to success was challenging, requiring patience and teamwork, but Müller and Strüby’s dedication paid off. Their vocational trainer, Dominik Bachmann, praised their initiative and highlighted the importance of such projects in preparing apprentices for their future careers.

This innovative project not only showcased the apprentices’ technical skills but also underscored the value of creativity and collaboration in scientific endeavors. The success of Müller and Strüby serves as an inspiration to their peers, encouraging more young talents to explore and push the boundaries of what’s possible in their fields.
