ANDRITZ to Investigate Carbon Capture Plant for Vanadium Production in Finland

(IN BRIEF) Pori Energia Oy, a Finnish energy company, has commissioned international technology group, ANDRITZ, to conduct a feasibility study for a carbon capture and storage plant. The plant will be built at the combined heat and power station in the city of Pori and will have a capacity of 100,000 tpa. The carbon captured will be used in a local vanadium plant for steel production and large-scale renewable energy storage. The study will provide design and cost calculations for a turnkey carbon capture plant with liquefaction, intermediate storage, and off-loading capabilities. Pori Energia Oy plans to use the study to reduce carbon from flue gases and make it available for vanadium production.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 21-Apr-2023 — /EuropaWire/ —  ANDRITZ (VIE: ANDR), an international technology group based in Austria, announces that it has been commissioned by Pori Energia Oy in Finland to carry out a feasibility study on a carbon capture and storage plant. The plant will be constructed at the city of Pori’s combined heat and power station (CHP) and will have a capacity of 100,000 tpa. The study will provide design and cost calculations for a turnkey carbon capture plant, including liquefaction, intermediate storage, and off-loading.

In addition, ANDRITZ will also examine the potential benefits of oxy rich fuel combustion, which can increase the concentration of CO2 in flue gases, thereby reducing overall capital investments. The carbon captured will be utilized in a local vanadium plant to support the extraction process. Vanadium is primarily used in the steel industry as an alloy component for high-strength applications and is also an emerging material for redox flow batteries in large-scale renewable energy storage.

ANDRITZ’s carbon capture plants are part of its comprehensive range of sustainable products. Pori’s CHP plant has a total thermal output of about 88 MW and is fueled by biomass, which was delivered by ANDRITZ in 2017. The feasibility study will enable Pori Energia Oy to proceed with its plans to reduce carbon from flue gases and make it available for vanadium production.
