(PRESS RELEASE) BRAUNAU AM INN,, 28-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — AMAG Austria Metall AG has aligned itself with over 1,000 energy-intensive companies across Europe by signing the Antwerp Declaration, a crucial call for action to secure the future of the continent’s industrial sector amid the transition to climate neutrality. The declaration advocates for a European Industrial Deal aimed at balancing the ambitious climate goals with the need to maintain Europe’s competitive edge in the global market.

Helmut Kaufmann, CEO of AMAG, emphasized the significance of this collective effort, stating, “By endorsing the Antwerp Declaration, AMAG is joining a powerful movement within the European industrial sector. We are facing immense challenges as we strive towards climate neutrality, and it is vital that we receive the necessary support to modernize and sustain our operations. Access to affordable, carbon-free energy and modern infrastructure is critical for achieving our sustainability goals.”

The Antwerp Declaration outlines ten essential actions to facilitate this transition. These include streamlining regulatory frameworks, reducing bureaucratic hurdles, and introducing legislative incentives for clean technologies. It also calls for a simplified state aid framework to encourage the adoption of green technologies and emphasizes the importance of Europe positioning itself as a competitive energy supplier on the global stage. Additionally, the declaration highlights the need for a comprehensive European strategy to enhance infrastructure in key areas such as energy, digitalization, recycling, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). A dedicated Vice President of the European Commission is proposed to oversee the implementation of the European Industrial Deal by 2029.

Kaufmann further stressed the importance of these measures, stating, “While combating climate change is non-negotiable, the survival of our industry is equally crucial. The Antwerp Declaration’s demands are pivotal for a successful transition to a carbon-neutral industrial landscape. In Austria, it’s imperative that we implement these strategies effectively, without overstepping what is necessary. Inadequate legislation, such as the incomplete Renewable Gas Act and the absence of an Electricity Price Equalization Act, is already jeopardizing the competitive stance of Austrian industry, even within Europe.”

By signing the Antwerp Declaration, AMAG reinforces its commitment to driving sustainable industrial practices while advocating for the necessary support to ensure the longevity and competitiveness of Europe’s industrial sector.
