Alunorte Estimates Up to 120,000 Tonnes of Lost Alumina Production From Gas Disruption

Parts of the natural gas infrastructure at the Alunorte alumina refinary in Para, Brazil.

(IN BRIEF) Alunorte has begun ramping up alumina production after Brazil’s oil, natural gas and biofuels regulator ANP approved the refinery to act as a self-importer of gas and the company reached a temporary agreement with its gas supplier CELBA regarding terminal access. The refinery had temporarily reduced alumina output after CELBA notified Alunorte of disruptions to natural gas availability, but with the temporary access agreement in place, production is now being increased toward full capacity while a long-term solution is pursued. Lost production during the reduced-output period is estimated at 100,000 to 120,000 tonnes of alumina, while the potential third-quarter 2026 financial impact for Bauxite & Alumina, including reduced production and gas purchases above the contract price, is estimated at USD 75 million to USD 100 million.

(PRESS RELEASE) OSLO, 14-Aug-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Alunorte has begun increasing alumina production after receiving approval from Brazil’s oil, natural gas and biofuels regulator, ANP, to act as a self-importer of gas and reaching a temporary agreement with its gas supplier CELBA regarding terminal access.

The development follows a period of reduced alumina production at the Alunorte refinery in Pará, Brazil, which was implemented as a contingency measure after CELBA notified the company of disruptions to natural gas availability.

With the temporary terminal access agreement now in place, Alunorte is ramping production back up toward full capacity while continuing to pursue a long-term solution.

The refinery’s reduced production during the disruption period is estimated to have resulted in lost output of between 100,000 and 120,000 tonnes of alumina.

The potential financial impact for Bauxite & Alumina in the third quarter of 2026, linked to the reduced production and the purchase of gas at prices above the contract price, is estimated at USD 75 million to USD 100 million.

The agreement with CELBA provides Alunorte with a temporary pathway to restore operations after the gas supply disruption, while the company continues work on a more permanent arrangement to secure reliable access to natural gas for the refinery.

The production ramp-up marks an important operational step for Alunorte as it seeks to return alumina output to full capacity and reduce the impact of recent energy supply constraints.
