Alstom successfully installs five HYpact compact switchgear modules for Netz Leipzig GmbH at the LzK substation in Leipzig

Levallois-Perret, France, 4-8-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom has successfully installed five HYpact compact switchgear modules for Netz Leipzig GmbH at the LzK substation in Leipzig. Originally designed for outdoor applications, the HYpact modules were installed for indoor use, replacing the existing air-insulated 110 kV technology operational since 1984. The system was fully operational from June this year.

The HYpact modules, a hybrid switchgear system, were optimally distributed across the first floor of the Leipzig substation. They were assembled in two phases to ensure that the substation could continue to operate. The first three modules were installed in December 2014 and the remaining two modules five months later. This hybrid concept from Alstom guarantees that the necessary minimum gaps between the modules are maintained. The HYpact modules ensure that the requirements for the safety of the facility and the personnel comply with the new DIN standard specified by the VDE [1].

Alstom’s HYpact module is compact in structure can save space by as much as 50% in comparison with conventional open-air technology. In addition, all switching units (power switches and circuit breakers) are integrated within the module and located in an enclosed gas-filled space. As a result maintenance costs can be reduced.

“Due to the significant amount of pre-assembly carried out at the factory, we were able to deliver an almost complete system, which meant less work to be carried out at site. The five HYpact modules were transported to Leipzig by road. The compact nature of the hybrid switchgear enabled the modules to be brought in through a narrow shaft to the first floor of the substation,” says Carsten Kramer, Product Sales Specialist at ALSTOM Grid GmbH, explaining the challenges of the project. “In principle, the flexible design of the switchgear permits a diverse array of configurations, which means that the system can be used in a manner that is efficient in terms of both cost and space,” he added.

Andreas Kühnl, General Manager of Netz Leipzig GmbH, added: “The HYpact concept of Alstom convinced us. The compact switchgear in its indoor application is ideal in tight conditions. Despite the difficult mounting, the remaining modules could be set-up and commissioned according to the agreement.”

The HYpact modules are developed, produced and tested in the Alstom Grid centre of competence for power switches and compact switchgear assemblies at the Kassel location.
