Alstom signed €5.1M contract to renew Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) generators in central Hungary

9-8-2013 — /EuropaWire/ —  Alstom have secured the €5.1 million (1.5 billion HUF) contract to retrofit the generators at Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in central Hungary, thanks to the company’s strong international reputation and its local capabilities. Providing 40% of Hungary’s electricity, Paks NPP is crucial to the country’s energy security. Its 2,000 MW power generation capacity powers almost a million households, underlining the significance of the deal for Alstom.

Alstom Hungary will service the eight operating generators across four nuclear reactor blocks plus one spare generator in a deal with Paks NPP that offers improved operational reliability. The work will be carried out at Alstom’s generator services in Budapest, utilizing the skills and expertise of both Hungarian and international engineer teams as well as several domestic subcontractors.

The eight 500 MW Ganz generators commissioned between 1982 and 1987 have had regular services scheduled every ten-twelve years for the planned fifty year life of each block. Under the terms of the contract the services of each generator will be performed at a rate of one per year from 2013-2021.

Alstom’s local team of experts has successfully completed several similar projects in Hungary in recent years. Its domestic service team has performed generator services in a number of Hungarian power plants (Dunamenti, Mátrai, AES Tisza, GTER Litér, GTER Sajószöged, DKCE Debrecen, Pécs and Oroszlány), in addition to involvement at power plant servicing projects in Finland, Austria and Turkey.

“We won this tender because our offer was backed up by the decades of equipment service experience our Hungarian experts have built up in the domestic market”, said László Deák, Country President, Alstom Hungary. “This contract creates a sound professional basis for Alstom’s participation in further development projects at this nuclear power plant.”
