Alstom Grid to provide SCADA pipeline management system for Marathon Pipe Line

13-6-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Building on Alstom Grid’s formal entry last year into the oil and gas market via its acquisition of EvolutionSCADA, the company recently announced that it will provide a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) pipeline management system for Marathon Pipe Line LLC (MPL).

MPL owns, leases or has ownership interests in approximately 8,300 miles of pipeline connecting refineries in Texas and Louisiana with end-user facilities as far away as Michigan and Pennsylvania. In addition to serving as the primary pipeline control and management system for this network, the new Alstom Grid SCADA technology will unify MPL’s scheduling, leak detection and historical data tracking functions under a single interface. 24/7 control functions will be handled across eight operator consoles.

The new MPL SCADA system is based on Alstom’s e-terrapipeline 3.0 technology. It combines the company’s decades of experience deploying SCADA to manage electricity grids with a track record of successful oil and gas industry applications dating back to the mid-1980’s. Over the course of two years, teams from MPL and Alstom worked closely together on a comprehensive system design effort and pilot project, resulting in a technology solution tailored to the unique challenges and requirements of MPL’s pipeline network.

“From day one, our team approached this project with a singular focus on the customer,” said Karim El Naggar, Vice President of Alstom Grid’s Network Management Solutions business. “Marathon Pipe Line outlined a very specific set of operational and technical needs and, together, we set about addressing them one-by-one. That level of in-depth collaboration exemplifies our preferred approach to the market.”

In addition to this latest project with MPL, Alstom Grid also is delivering a pipeline SCADA control system for LOOP – the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, LLC.
