Alstom Drives Safety and Efficiency Upgrades for Poland’s Key Freight Corridor

(IN BRIEF) Alstom will provide advanced rail traffic control systems for the modernization of the Poznań freight bypass, a project that will enhance the capacity of crucial railway lines no. 395 and 352. Under a contract with Krakowskie Zakłady Automatyki S.A., the company will deliver new and refurbished traffic control devices across multiple sites including the Poznań Franowo and Poznań IV Local Control Centres. This initiative forms part of broader investments to modernise around 70 km of track, rebuild stations, and upgrade the traction network, thereby improving Poland’s key freight corridor. The new systems will enable remote and automated control, self-diagnostics, and damage registration, which are expected to significantly boost safety and efficiency. Alstom’s long-standing expertise in the Polish market, demonstrated through projects like the ERTMS level 2 system and the Warsaw Metro control centre, reinforces its capability to support this major infrastructure upgrade.

(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 31-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom is set to supply advanced rail traffic control and management systems for the upcoming modernization of the Poznań freight bypass. This upgrade is aimed at boosting the capacity of railway lines no. 395 and 352, which play a crucial role in Poland’s freight transport network. The integration of state-of-the-art computerised control systems will facilitate remote and automated management of rail traffic along these upgraded sections.

Under a contract signed with Krakowskie Zakłady Automatyki S.A., Alstom will deliver new traffic control devices for various stations and for the Poznań Franowo Local Control Centre, as well as revamp existing systems at the Poznań IV Local Control Centre. The project also includes the installation of new line block devices and the modernization of systems at rail-road crossings.

This investment is part of a larger-scale initiative to modernise approximately 70 km of track and to establish new railway stations within the Poznań districts, along with the reconstruction of both the tracks and the traction network. These efforts aim to significantly enhance capacity on one of Poland’s key freight routes.

Adam Juretko, Managing Director of the Alstom Katowice site in Poland, stated, “The modernisation of the Poznań freight bypass is another infrastructural project of significant importance for the Polish railways. As one of the largest manufacturers of railway control systems and devices in Europe, we have unique competences, and many years of experience gained on the domestic and international market.” His sentiments are echoed by Paweł Mentel, President of Krakowskie Zakłady Automatyki S.A., who added, “The modernization of the Poznań Freight Bypass is a project of great importance for the development of the entire Wielkopolska region, and in particular Poznań and its surroundings, which will bring many benefits not only to the residents but also to the entire transport system in this region. I am very glad that we will be able to carry out this task together and that thanks to the use of Alstom devices, rail traffic will be safer and more efficient.”

The implementation of these modern control systems is expected to enhance working conditions for the PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe staff. The new technology will allow for remote management, automated traffic control, self-diagnostics, and rapid damage detection, thereby streamlining operations and increasing safety throughout the greater Poznań area.

Alstom’s extensive experience in the Polish market is well documented. The company has pioneered the first implementation of the ERTMS level 2 system, constructed ERTMS systems on ten PKP PLK railway lines, built a control centre for the Warsaw Metro, installed over 30 centralised rail traffic control systems, equipped more than 220 stations with computerised interlocking systems, and modernised upwards of 1,700 level crossing signalling systems.
