Alfa Laval Expands PureBallast 3 Ultra Portfolio With New Skid-Mounted Ballast Water Treatment System

(IN BRIEF) Alfa Laval has launched PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid at SMM 2026, expanding its ballast water management portfolio with a compact, factory-assembled system designed to reduce installation time and engineering complexity. The chemical-free solution combines filtration and enhanced UV treatment for operation in fresh, brackish and marine waters, including low-clarity conditions, and is available in capacities from 32 to 600 m³/h. Delivered fully assembled, tested and connectivity-ready, the skid is designed to simplify shipyard installation while supporting remote monitoring and lifecycle service. PureBallast 3 Ultra is type approved by the IMO and US Coast Guard, while more than 10,000 PureBallast systems have been ordered globally.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUND, 4-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Alfa Laval has expanded its PureBallast 3 Ultra portfolio with the launch of PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid, a prefabricated skid-mounted ballast water management system designed to simplify installation, reduce onboard engineering work and minimise system footprint.

Unveiled at SMM 2026, the new configuration combines the biological treatment performance of PureBallast 3 Ultra with a factory-assembled turnkey design.

The system was developed in response to demand from shipyards and vessel operators for more standardised installation options. Customers can now choose between different PureBallast 3 Ultra configurations depending on vessel design and shipyard requirements while retaining the same underlying ballast water treatment technology.

Prefabricated system targets faster shipyard installation

As shipyards seek to shorten installation schedules and increase standardisation, demand has grown for factory-assembled ballast water management systems that require less integration work onboard.

PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid addresses this requirement by delivering the complete treatment system on a compact skid with prefabricated piping.

The system is assembled and tested before delivery and arrives ready for connection, eliminating the need for shipyards to install individual system components separately onboard.

Alfa Laval said this approach can reduce engineering requirements, simplify installation and lower overall project complexity.

Tobias Döscher, Head of Global Sales & Customer Support at Alfa Laval PureBallast, said the new configuration was developed in response to customer demand for a more space-efficient skid solution.

He said customers can select the configuration best suited to their vessel and installation requirements while retaining the treatment performance and compliance support provided by the PureBallast 3 Ultra platform.

Chemical-free treatment across different water conditions

PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid uses the same treatment technology introduced with the wider PureBallast 3 Ultra platform.

The automated inline system operates without chemicals and combines high-performance filtration with enhanced ultraviolet treatment to provide biological disinfection across fresh, brackish and marine waters.

It is also engineered to operate in challenging low-clarity water conditions.

The system’s optimised reactor design is intended to provide effective treatment while limiting energy consumption.

PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid is available in treatment capacities ranging from 32 to 600 cubic metres per hour.

All PureBallast 3 Ultra systems, including the skid-mounted version, are delivered connectivity-ready, supporting remote monitoring and service optimisation throughout a vessel’s operating life.

IMO and US Coast Guard type approvals

The PureBallast 3 Ultra system is type approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

It is designed to treat ballast water across all salinity levels, supporting vessel compliance across different operating environments.

The new skid version retains access to the existing range of PureBallast 3 Ultra options and add-ons, allowing vessel owners and shipyards to configure the system according to individual operational and installation requirements.

Alfa Laval builds on nearly two decades of PureBallast experience

The PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid launch builds on nearly two decades of experience in ballast water treatment accumulated through thousands of PureBallast installations and service projects.

Alfa Laval said more than 10,000 PureBallast systems have been ordered globally.

The company continues to invest in the ballast water management segment and provides lifecycle support to vessel operators from installation through ongoing operation and servicing.

With the addition of PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid, Alfa Laval is extending the platform to address growing demand for standardised and compact solutions while maintaining the treatment technology and service capabilities available across the wider PureBallast portfolio.
