COPENHAGEN, 27-8-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — As part of Copenhagen Municipality’s vision to create new “Climate Resilient Neighbourhoods”, Skt. Kjelds Plads and Bryggervangen in the Copenhagen district Østerbro will be transformed into a climate-adapted green neighbourhood, and the area will set the standards for how to develop climate-adapted urban areas. ALECTIA and the architect SLA have won the assignment to embellish and climate-adapt the two areas for Copenhagen Municipality and HOFOR.
From boring grey roundabout to green oasis
The aim of the projects on Skt. Kjelds Plads and Bryggervangen is partly to protect the area against flooding from cloudbursts and partly to create a new green neighbourhood. It is the first project of about 300 in the municipality with the purpose of protecting the city against future heavy cloudbursts, and thus the area will act as a pilot project and “show window” for how to use new climate adaptation technologies – nationally as well as internationally.
ALECTIA makes a strong imprint on the future climate adaptation In the evaluation of the project from ALECTIA and SLA it was emphasized that the climate adaptation and the recreational area were integrated and that they supported each other. Furthermore, great satisfaction was expressed that ALECTIA had designed a solution using the nature and landscape elements to manage the rainwater and thus reducing the need for expensive investments in sewerage systems.
“Together with our partner SLA we have prepared a project proposal which creates an attractive new recreational area in the city, and of course we a very proud that Copenhagen Municipality and HOFOR at the same time expressed great satisfaction with the technical protection against heavy cloudbursts”, said Vice president in ALECTIA Torben Franch and continued:
“The project is a vitalization of our vision: Masterminding Sustainable Progress and clearly demonstrates that ALECTIA – as one of the strongest advisers in climate adaptation solutions – is at the forefront when it comes to making an imprint on the future climate adapted city development”.
