Airbus Taps ENGIE for 20% Energy Savings and 85% Emissions Cut across 22 European Facilities

Airbus Taps ENGIE for 20% Energy Savings and 85% Emissions Cut across 22 European Facilities

(IN BRIEF) ENGIE will support Airbus’s goal to cut energy use by 20% and greenhouse gas emissions by 85% across its 22 European sites by 2030. A Paris Air Show–signed framework agreement tasks ENGIE with deploying heat-pump and biomass boiler installations, LED lighting and smart-metering upgrades, rooftop and ground-based solar arrays, and intelligent energy-management systems. Initial engineering studies and site-specific roadmaps begin this summer, followed by infrastructure roll-out from 2026 and commissioning by 2029, after which ENGIE will operate and maintain the assets. Building on over 40 years of Franco-EU collaboration—including biomass boiler projects in Toulouse and Nantes—ENGIE aims to expand its industrial decarbonisation portfolio from 160 to 250 sites by 2030 using renewable, waste-to-energy, and waste-heat recovery technologies.

(PRESS RELEASE) LA DÈFENSE, 20-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — ENGIE has been selected by Airbus to deliver comprehensive decarbonisation solutions across all 22 of its European sites in France, Germany, and Spain. Under a framework agreement signed at the Paris Air Show, ENGIE will deploy tailor-made measures designed to reduce Airbus’s energy consumption by 20% and cut Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2030 (base year 2015).

Key elements of the partnership include:

  • Decarbonising heat production through installation of industrial heat pumps and biomass boilers
  • Energy efficiency upgrades, from low‐energy LED lighting to advanced smart metering
  • On-site renewable power via photovoltaic arrays on roofs, shade structures, and ground-mounted installations
  • Smart Energy Management Systems to optimise consumption in real time

The project’s first phase—beginning this summer—will see ENGIE conduct detailed engineering studies and develop bespoke decarbonisation roadmaps for each Airbus facility. Roll-out of infrastructure will start in 2026, with all systems commissioned by 2029. ENGIE will then assume ongoing operations and maintenance of the new assets.

ENGIE and Airbus have collaborated in France for more than 40 years, most recently commissioning a 20 MW biomass boiler in Toulouse (2024) and constructing an 8 MW biomass boiler in Nantes. Extending this successful track record into Germany and Spain, the new agreement reinforces ENGIE’s ambition to operate 250 industrial decarbonisation projects across Europe by 2030—up from 160 today—through local renewable energy, waste-to-energy, and waste-heat recovery solutions.

“Our long-standing relationship with Airbus highlights ENGIE’s ability to deliver industrial-scale energy transitions using local renewable resources,” said Frank Lacroix, EVP of Local Energy Infrastructures at ENGIE. “We are committed to making the energy transition reliable, accessible, and sustainable—helping Airbus and all our industrial clients tackle climate change while boosting competitiveness and resilience.”

“We’re delighted to step up our decarbonisation efforts with ENGIE,” added Julie Kitcher, Chief Sustainability Officer at Airbus. “ENGIE’s expertise, combined with our operational know-how, is the winning formula to achieve our ambitious 2030 targets.”
