ABB to design, manufacture, and supply submarine cable system under the bay of Edsviken in northern Stockholm

Submarine cable system link under the bay of Edsviken is part of an entirely new structure for the region’s electrical grid

Zurich, Switzerland,  27-02-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $11 million from the Swedish utility Svenska kraftnät to design, manufacture, and supply a submarine cable system under the bay of Edsviken in northern Stockholm.

The link is part of the larger grid project Stockholms Ström, which will provide an entirely new structure for the electrical grid in the growing Stockholm region. The project is scheduled to be commissioned by end 2016.

The high-voltage alternating current 220 kilovolt (kV) cable system contains five circuits with single-core cables with a total length of 21 kilometers, which will have the capacity to transmit power across the bay between the areas of Kevinge and Bergshamra, a distance of 1.25 kilometers. By connecting the submarine cable to existing underground cables, energy will be transmitted below ground and under water, replacing overhead lines in the region and reclaiming valuable land.

“As the Stockholm region grows, the demand for more efficient power transmission and utilization of land increases. This submarine cable system will support the new electrical grid structure being established enhance reliability of power supplies” said Patrick Fragman, head of ABB’s Grid Systems business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division. “ABB has state-of-the art high voltage cable manufacturing facilities and considerable experience in providing such turnkey cable system solutions.”

The Edsviken project is the sixth high-voltage cable system that Svenska kraftnät has awarded to ABB over the past six years.

As one of the world’s leading high-voltage cable manufacturers, ABB has extensive domain knowledge and experience across a range of applications including offshore wind farm connections, powering oil and gas platforms from shore and underground or submarine interconnectors.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility, industry, and transport and infrastructure customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in roughly 100 countries and employs about 145,000 people.
