What exactly does climate change and health have to do with each other? That is one of the many questions that Ramboll will address at the New York Climate Week.

COPENHAGEN, 24-Sep-2018 — /EuropaWire/ — Cities are responsible for more than 70% of global CO2 emissions. At the same time a large amount of the seven million people that each year die from air pollution live in cities.

This is just one of many reasons why climate change and health issues like air pollution should not be solved separately through silo initiatives. They are solved most efficient through urban leadership, integrated masterplanning and cross-sector innovation.

That is one of the learnings, Ramboll is bringing to the New York Climate Week (NYCW) – an annual event in New York that gathers some of the world’s most influential leaders and experts from business, government and society to demonstrate how they are contributing with solutions to some of the largest global challenges.

An interactive workshop

An interactive workshop ‘The Climate-Health Nexus: Uncover Hidden Co-Benefits’ is organized in collaboration with Danish Cleantech Hub as an official New York Climate Week Side event. Here, the focus will be on the business case of climate adaptation and resiliency planning when it comes to health impacts of building occupants, and the surrounding community:

How do developers, insurers, and urban planners currently address health outcomes when it comes to resiliency planning? Are climate change projections factored in to new development? And are social and health co-benefits, such as increased physical activity, indoor air quality, more civic engagement, reduced heat island, being valued?

These are some of the key questions that will be discussed. To set the scene, Ramboll will demonstrate their innovative data-driven tools together with the Center of Active Design, who will contribute with their research on the crucial link between urban design and social outcomes.

Engaging the community

As part of the UN Global Compact Action Platform ‘Health is Everybody’s business’, Ramboll will be conducting a closed-door session on ‘Taxonomy for businesses based on Ramboll research’. Building on the SDG reporting framework developed by GRI to provide practical examples for how to take action that delivers measurable impact, we will discuss how to best frame the deliverables, and putting further substance to a practical resource for healthy business action.

Ramboll Group Executive Director Søren Holm Johansen is participating in a high-level conference under the headline: ‘A Roadmap to the future of global, sustainable growth’ where he will present on how collaboration and partnerships drive the shift in circular economy.

Ramboll will also be present at an event arranged by the Melting Pot Foundation, started by NOMA-founder Claus Meyer and Novo Nordisk about ‘Social impact through community action’, where we will offer insights of how we collaborate with communities to increase sustainability. One example is a climate resiliency project in New York City, where we test new ways of engaging the community.
