GRÄSSLIN room thermostat clocks: EU’s ErP labels ensure transparency and make energy efficient solutions possible

St. Georgen, Germany, 9-9-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — The labelling of energy efficiency classes for household appliances such as refrigerators or dishwashers has been in place for quite some time and is a popular decision-making tool when purchasing appliances, and as of September 26, 2015, it will be a requirement for products and systems for heat generation and storage. The European ErP Directive (ErP = energy-related products) stipulates that system components such as room thermostats must show their energy efficiency contribution. This makes it possible for the planner or installer to select the optimal controller for the system at a glance. At the same time, this information facilitates the calculation of the overall efficiency class of the system. The objective of the provisions is to increase the energy efficiency of building technology in the long term.

From ON/OFF to OpenTherm
The Grässlin portfolio of room thermostats ranges from simple controllers for ON/OFF operation to PID controllers to room thermostat clocks with OpenTherm interface for modulating heat generation control with external input for an external temperature sensor, both in customized versions and a version for the retail market. The energy efficiency contribution and the class of the temperature controller for creation of the ErP label are located on the packaging and in the data sheet.

The simple room thermostat, which falls in ErP class I, ensures replacement for protection of existing systems. The efficient room thermostat clocks in class IV to VIII are well-suited for new systems and renovations.

feeling is the flagship in the product portfolio. It is a digital room thermostat clock with weekly program, available either hard-wired or for radio control. feeling offers up to 48 different time and temperature programs per day. Various operating modes enable adaptation to various circumstances; some examples include a holiday or party program, an energy-saving mode or automatic operation. The thermostat features a switch-off function with frost protection, including adjustable frost protection temperature. feeling is available both for 2- point (ON/OFF) operation and with pulse width modulation; for the former, the thermostat falls in energy efficiency class IV.

In the OpenTherm version, the control and programming of hot water and heating applications is enabled by the bidirectional transmission of data between the room thermostat clock and the boiler. Thanks to additional inputs, outer temperature sensors or motion detectors can be connected, for example. In addition, remote control of the room thermostat is possible via phone call or text message. In the OpenTherm version, feeling achieves energy efficiency class V, or even class VI with additional temperature sensor (OTC).

Online service
Data sheets, operating manuals and safety information for GRÄSSLIN room thermostats and room thermostat clocks will be available online starting on September 26, 2015. The data sheets are generated live so that the planners and installers can always download the current version as a PDF at www.graesslin.de.
