Freie Universität Berlin supports Apache Software Foundation by hosting servers and setting up and maintaining new systems at no charge

Free Server and System Maintenance for Apache Software Foundation

23-8-2013 — /EuropaWire/ — Freie Universität Berlin and the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), following an initiative of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, are cooperating in making servers available in the data processing center of the university’s Institute of Computer Science. The ASF is a nonprofit organization that develops open-source software and makes it available to the public free of charge. Members of the ASF were in the past and are currently involved in the development of many essential standards, products, and technologies of the Internet. Freie Universität supports the ASF by hosting servers at no charge, as well as setting up and maintaining new systems.

Many of the ASF projects are fundamental to the functioning and continuing development of the Internet. They form the basis of many software products in various application fields. “The open source software provided by the ASF is crucial for many research projects at Freie Universität and other academic institutions,” said Ulrich Stärk, who is in charge of the project at the Institute of Computer Science at Freie Universität.

“We are grateful to Freie Universität Berlin for generously providing The Apache Software Foundation with hosting, bandwidth, and hands-on support,” said Brett Porter, Chairman of The Apache Software Foundation. “The additional capacity has helped us to meet the demands of the growing number of projects, Committers, and contributors that depend on our infrastructure for their collaborative development around the clock. This donation improves the service to our many Committers in Europe, which benefits the globally distributed Apache community as a whole.”
