Major Spanish electric and engineering companies and contractors attended the Mobile Substation Showroom of Alstom Grid Spain

12-8-2013 — /EuropaWire/ —  From 10 to 12 July, the mobile substation business unit of Alstom Grid Spain, Alstom’s worldwide centre of excellence dedicated to this technology, presented a showroom of mobile substations, which was attended by the major electric companies, engineering firms and Spanish contractors.

On display at this event were 7 different mobile substations on loan from Spain’s major electric companies. Manufactured by Alstom Grid, these substations have already been delivered to clients and are currently in use.

The showroom allowed Alstom to demonstrate the great flexibility and adaptability of these items of equipment, which is always custom-made to suit the needs of each client and can be combined with gas insulated (GIS) or hybrid switchgear (in hybrid switchgear part of the module is insulated by gas and the other part by air). The mobile substations on display were mounted inside trailer containers or on trailer beds so they could be transported by conventional trucks or special vehicles without the need for traffic permits.

Alstom Grid’s facilities in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) are a benchmark for the technological development, design and manufacture of this type of substation and mobile units are built there for export worldwide. This Showroom has served as an excellent opportunity for presenting Alstom’s various mobile solutions and technology.

What is a mobile electric substation

Substations are an essential part of the process for the generation, transformation, transmission and finally distribution of power to the end customer. Sometimes, the equipment of an electric substation may be affected by catastrophes, or undergo maintenance operations and improvement works. To guarantee supply on these occasions, Alstom Grid provides its clients with mobile substations.

Mobile substations are designed to distribute electricity on a temporary basis to areas that have lost their power supply, and thus allow time for any necessary repairs, maintenance or changes to be made to the equipment. They are also sometimes used to temporarily increase a specific substation’s capacity. Because they can be installed anywhere in a matter of hours, they have become an essential tool for guaranteeing the supply of power in the current electrical system.
