Energy Digital Twin and Renewable Initiatives Cut Emissions at Hexagon’s Italian Plants

Energy Digital Twin and Renewable Initiatives Cut Emissions at Hexagon’s Italian Plants

(IN BRIEF) Hexagon is driving a comprehensive digital and energy transformation at its Moncalieri and Grugliasco plants in northern Italy as part of its global efficiency programme. Using Leica 3D scanning to develop an energy Digital Twin, the company has optimised factory layouts and improved operational planning. Combined with new energy-saving measures — including LED lighting, upgraded insulation, and photovoltaic panels that will meet 44% of electricity needs by 2025 — the initiatives have cut emissions by the equivalent of over 100 Italians’ annual carbon footprints. Gas consumption has fallen by 37% at Grugliasco and 6.5% at Moncalieri, while digitalisation has reduced paper-related emissions. Leaders Luca Ruggiero and Fabrizio Pescetto emphasised the company’s goal of merging innovation with environmental responsibility to shape sustainable manufacturing practices.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 10-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Hexagon, a global leader in precision measurement and manufacturing technologies, is accelerating its energy and digital transformation initiatives at its Moncalieri and Grugliasco plants in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. These projects are part of a broader plan to enhance operational efficiency, optimise energy use, and reduce environmental impact across the company’s Italian operations.

Digital Twin Enables Smarter Energy Management in Grugliasco

At Hexagon’s Grugliasco headquarters, home to its production centre for measuring machines, the company has implemented an energy Digital Twin to improve energy efficiency through advanced simulation and data integration. Using Leica 3D scanning technology, Hexagon generated a highly detailed 3D model of the facility — a Digital Factory twin — that allows precise spatial planning, optimal equipment layout, and early identification of potential structural constraints such as low ceilings or protruding pillars.

This digital mapping enables proactive decision-making, streamlining future expansions and infrastructure upgrades while ensuring optimal energy management.

Sustainable Production Initiatives at Moncalieri

At Hexagon’s Moncalieri plant, which focuses on precision machining, sustainability initiatives are reshaping production processes and reducing waste. Both Moncalieri and Grugliasco facilities have upgraded to LED lighting systems and implemented a series of energy efficiency measures, cutting emissions by 250 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) — more than half (52%) of their total reduction potential.

Additional improvements to heating and insulation systems have resulted in significant energy savings: a 37% reduction in gas use at Grugliasco and 6.5% at Moncalieri compared to the 2013–2019 average, avoiding a further 130 tCO₂e and 7 tCO₂e in emissions respectively.

Digitalisation has also played a role in reducing environmental impact, with paper consumption cut enough to save approximately 4 tonnes of CO₂ annually. In the next phase, photovoltaic panels being installed throughout 2025 will supply 44% of the facilities’ total electricity needs, based on 2023 usage data.

Collectively, these measures have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by an amount equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of over 100 Italian residents.

A Model for the Ecological and Digital Transition

These developments form part of Hexagon’s global factory efficiency programme, which integrates sustainability and digitalisation to shape the future of smart manufacturing.

Luca Ruggiero, Managing Director of Sales at Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division in Italy, said:
“We are extremely proud of the progress achieved in Moncalieri and Grugliasco. These projects embody our commitment to merging technological innovation with sustainability — delivering measurable value for our customers, our operations, and the environment.”

Fabrizio Pescetto, Managing Director of Manufacturing at Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division in Italy, added:
“We firmly believe the manufacturing industry has a crucial role to play in the global transition to a more sustainable future. Our Italian plants demonstrate how efficiency, renewable energy, and smart technology can work together to achieve tangible results.”

Through its commitment to cutting-edge innovation and responsible production, Hexagon is demonstrating how digital transformation and ecological progress can go hand in hand, ensuring a smarter, more sustainable manufacturing future.
