(PRESS RELEASE) SBUSSNANG / HELSINKI, 7-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Stadler has secured a major contract with Pääkaupunkiseudun Kaupunkiliikenne Oy, the public transport operator for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, to deliver 63 state-of-the-art Tango Nordic trams, with an option for up to 120 additional vehicles. This milestone order represents Stadler’s first tram contract in Finland, strengthening the company’s presence across the Nordic region and marking a significant step forward in sustainable urban mobility for Helsinki.

The new Tango Nordic trams combine cutting-edge design with passenger comfort, higher capacity, and enhanced sustainability. Under the agreement, Stadler will provide comprehensive maintenance services for over 30 years, including technical support, spare parts supply, local warehouse setup, and an efficient logistics system — ensuring the fleet’s reliability and long-term operational excellence.

“We are convinced that the type of tram we selected is the best possible for the demanding conditions of Helsinki,” said Eetu Kinnunen, Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Kaupunkiliikenne Oy.

Ansgar Brockmeyer, Executive Vice President Sales & Marketing at Stadler, emphasized the importance of the project for the region: “The Helsinki Metropolitan Area has a long tradition of trams that have shaped urban mobility for decades. We are honored that the Stadler Tango Nordic has been chosen to carry this legacy forward. Passengers can look forward to a comfortable, modern tram that meets the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and sustainability.”

Sustainable Mobility for the Future

The Tango Nordic model is based on Stadler’s proven Tango platform and has been specifically tailored for Helsinki’s climate and infrastructure. Designed for energy efficiency and durability, the trams feature lightweight construction, zero-emission steel, and high recycled-content components. They are optimized for smooth operation, low maintenance, and reduced lifecycle emissions. With greater passenger capacity and energy-efficient systems, these trams support both climate-neutral goals and reduced operational costs, aligning with the city’s long-term sustainability objectives.

Seamless Integration with Helsinki’s Cityscape

The new fleet will replace the iconic Valmet trams from the 1970s and 1980s and play a key role in expanding and modernizing the region’s tram network. To ensure seamless integration with Helsinki’s urban environment, the tram design was developed in collaboration with Aivan, a leading Nordic design and innovation studio. The result is a contemporary vehicle that harmonizes with the city’s architectural identity while enhancing the passenger experience.
