New SBTi-approved Scope 3 target keeps Hempel aligned with 1.5°C pathway while reflecting business transformation

New SBTi-approved Scope 3 target keeps Hempel aligned with 1.5°C pathway while reflecting business transformation

(IN BRIEF) Hempel has updated its Scope 3 emissions target, which has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, confirming its alignment with the 1.5°C climate pathway while supporting business growth. The company has shifted from a 50% absolute reduction to a 55% intensity-based reduction measured against euro value added (GEVA). This new approach reflects Hempel’s evolving business model following acquisitions, divestments, and updated emissions data, ensuring that profitability and sustainability remain closely linked. Executive Vice President and CTO Emilie Barriau emphasized that the update reaffirms Hempel’s strong ambition to reduce emissions across its value chain while continuing to innovate for customers.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 17-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Hempel A/S has reaffirmed its climate ambition with the approval of its updated Scope 3 emissions target by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The revised target ensures Hempel continues to align its climate action with the 1.5°C pathway while reflecting the company’s evolving business profile and ongoing growth strategy.

The updated Scope 3 target replaces the previous 50% absolute reduction with a new goal of cutting emissions intensity by 55% per euro value added (GEVA – Greenhouse Gas Emissions per Value Added). This shift to a financial intensity target means Hempel can better capture the relationship between emissions and the financial value generated, ensuring that sustainability and profitability remain closely interconnected.

“Our ambition is as strong as ever,” said Emilie Barriau, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Hempel. “We remain firmly committed to reducing emissions in line with climate science, and this updated target ensures our goals stay both relevant and reflective of our evolving business.”

Scope 3 emissions cover indirect emissions across Hempel’s value chain, including raw materials, packaging, and logistics. According to SBTi guidelines, companies must revalidate their targets every five years or when significant business changes occur. Since setting its original target in 2021, Hempel has undergone acquisitions, divestments, and updated emissions data reviews, all of which made recalibrating its Scope 3 baseline timely and necessary.

By adopting an intensity-based approach, Hempel reinforces the principle that sustainable business growth must go hand in hand with climate responsibility. The updated target highlights the company’s commitment to developing innovative solutions that deliver more sustainable value to customers while reducing shared environmental impacts.

As part of its continued sustainability engagement, Emilie Barriau will also represent Hempel at the Partnerships for the Future Summit during New York Climate Week on 22 September 2025.
