Nokia Edge platform deployed at Maher Terminals to enhance port efficiency, security, and real-time operational visibility

(IN BRIEF) Nokia and Future Technologies Venture have deployed the Nokia Edge platform at Maher Terminals, one of the largest container terminals in North America, to improve operational efficiency, visibility, and security. Covering 450 acres in the Port of New York and New Jersey, Maher processes around 2 million containers annually. The platform integrates private wireless connectivity, edge computing, ruggedized devices, and applications to support yard management, crane operations, and gate logistics. CIO Laura Markham emphasized the solution’s role in boosting network reliability and meeting cybersecurity goals, while Nokia and Future Technologies highlighted its scalability, flexibility, and ability to support future cargo handling innovations.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 9-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia, in collaboration with its partner Future Technologies Venture, has deployed the Nokia Edge platform at Maher Terminals, one of the world’s largest container terminal operators. The deployment brings secure private wireless connectivity, edge computing, ruggedized industrial devices, and advanced applications to support real-time data and analytics across Maher’s terminal operations in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey. This integration is designed to increase efficiency, improve visibility, and strengthen security for one of North America’s busiest marine terminals.

Maher Terminals manages a 450-acre facility within the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey complex, processing nearly 2 million containers each year. To optimize operations such as yard management, crane handling, and gate logistics, Maher selected Nokia’s Edge platform to deliver the high-bandwidth, low-latency, and secure connectivity required for mission-critical port activities.

Laura Markham, CIO of Maher Terminals, explained: “We chose Nokia’s solution to enhance our wireless connectivity, scalability, and cybersecurity. This deployment improves network reliability and equipment communications while supporting advanced cargo handling and identification capabilities. The private wireless aspects were especially important in helping us meet our cybersecurity objectives for securing port operations.”

The Nokia Edge platform combines Nokia DAC for reliable private wireless networking with MX Industrial Edge (MXIE) computing capabilities, enabling real-time asset tracking and positioning. Industrial-grade Nokia devices connect vehicles such as straddle carriers and operational teams, ensuring efficient data transfer and communication. Device management tools support remote configuration and firmware updates, while the Nokia Network Digital Twin validates network performance with live telemetry, helping Maher Terminals plan operations more effectively.

Peter Cappiello, CEO of Future Technologies Venture, said: “We are proud to partner with Nokia to deliver a turnkey solution for Maher Terminals. Our role as an IT solutions provider is to meet the demands of transportation and logistics customers, and we selected the Nokia Edge platform because of its scalability and flexibility across a wide range of use cases and applications.”

David de Lancellotti, Vice President of Enterprise Campus Edge Sales at Nokia, added: “This deployment with Maher Terminals shows how our Edge platform can integrate connectivity, edge computing, devices, and applications to transform port operations. Together with Future Technologies Venture, we are supporting Maher in achieving their business and sustainability goals while enhancing efficiency and visibility across their operations.”
