Alstom appoints Gustavo Mateos to lead signalling and railway safety operations while joining Executive Committee in Spain and Portugal

(IN BRIEF) Alstom has named Gustavo Mateos as Managing Director of its Signalling, Infrastructure, and Railway Safety Unit for Spain and Portugal, while also appointing him to the Executive Committee of Alstom Spain and Portugal. Based at the company’s Center of Excellence in Madrid, Mateos will lead projects in signalling, railway safety, digital mobility, cybersecurity, electrification, and infrastructure maintenance. With over 30 years of industry experience, including senior roles at SEPSA and InfoGlobal, he has managed major projects worldwide and since joining Alstom in 2015, has directed landmark initiatives across Spain and abroad, from Madrid Metro automation to the Tren Maya in Mexico and metros in Porto, Istanbul, and São Paulo. The Madrid center employs over 800 specialists and has delivered more than 27 global projects, strengthening its position as a benchmark in railway safety and signalling technologies.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 5-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom has announced the appointment of Gustavo Mateos as Managing Director of its Signalling, Infrastructure, and Railway Safety Unit for Spain and Portugal, a role that places him at the helm of both national and international projects. Operating from Alstom’s Center of Excellence in Madrid, Mateos will oversee cutting-edge areas including railway signalling, safety, cybersecurity, electrification, digital mobility, and infrastructure maintenance.

Alongside this new position, Mateos has also been named a member of the Executive Committee of Alstom Spain and Portugal, a move that reinforces the company’s strategic leadership and long-term commitment to advancing mobility solutions in the region.

Mateos brings with him more than three decades of experience in the rail industry. A graduate in Industrial Technical Engineering from the Universidad Pontificia Comillas (ICAI) and holder of an Executive MBA from IE Business School, he previously held senior roles at SEPSA and InfoGlobal, managing major railway projects across the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

He joined Alstom in 2015 as Head of Operations within the signalling unit, and just two years later was promoted to Project Director. Since then, he has overseen significant projects across Spain such as signalling systems for ADIF’s railway network, the Barcelona tram, the Barcelona and Málaga metro systems, and more recently, the automation of Madrid Metro’s Line 6. His international portfolio includes involvement in emblematic projects like the Tren Maya in Mexico, metros in Porto, Istanbul, and São Paulo, the Cairo monorail, and high-speed rail developments in Saudi Arabia.

The Center of Excellence in Madrid, where Mateos will continue to operate, is a global reference point for Alstom in signalling and railway safety. More than 800 experts are based at the site, which has contributed to over 27 key projects in recent years, spanning both urban and interurban networks worldwide.
