Luxembourg Institute of Health launches five lecture series spanning microbiome, cancer, proteomics, and epidemiology

(IN BRIEF) The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) has announced five lecture series beginning this autumn and continuing through 2026, covering themes from microbiome research and causal inference to proteomics, cancer immunotherapy, and epidemiology. Led by LIH principal investigators and supported by partners including the University of Luxembourg, LIST, LISER, and the National Cancer Registry, the programmes will feature both national and international speakers. Open to all and funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund, the lecture series aim to foster scientific exchange and highlight advances across major fields of biomedical research.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUXEMBOURG, 27-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) will host five engaging lecture series over the coming academic year, bringing together local and international experts to share the latest scientific insights across diverse fields of biomedical research. The lectures, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), will be open to all interested participants.

Beginning in September 2025 and running until August 2026, Dr. Mahesh Desai, Leader of the Nutrition, Microbiome & Immunity Group, will lead the series “Pathogenesis in the Age of the Microbiome.” Organized under the MICRO-PATH Doctoral Training Unit (DTU), this initiative will feature speakers from the University of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST).

From October 2025 through July 2026, Dr. Sophie Pilleron, Head of the Ageing, Cancer & Disparities Research Unit (ACADI), will coordinate the lecture series “Causal Inference Methods for Real-World Data,” with contributions from academic partners including the University of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER).

In November 2025, Dr. Gunnar Dittmar, Leader of the Proteomics of Cellular Signaling group, will inaugurate “Omics Meets Physics,” a series featuring experts from the University of Luxembourg’s Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB), alongside international scientists from the United States, Germany, France, and beyond.

January 2026 will see the launch of the 7th edition of the Cancer Research lecture series, led by Dr. Bassam Janji, Leader of the Tumor Immunotherapy & Microenvironment (TIME) group, together with Dr. Johannes Meiser, Head of LIH’s Department of Cancer Research. The programme will bring together both national and international speakers to discuss the latest advances in oncology.

Finally, in October 2026, Dr. Claudine Backes, Leader of the Cancer, Epidemiology & Prevention group, along with colleagues Dr. Allini Mafra Da Costa and Dr. Jason Settels, and with the support of the National Cancer Registry (RNC), will launch the “Epidemiology & Prevention” lecture series, with external speakers presenting on cancer prevention and public health.

Together, these five lecture series reflect LIH’s ongoing commitment to advancing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and engaging the wider scientific community in key biomedical domains. Posters with detailed schedules for each series will be released soon.
